Anyone painted their kitchen cupboards?

Our kitchen units are a medium ash colour and I hate them! We're hoping to sell up this year, we were going to get new doors and worktops but dh has suggested painting the units instead in a grey colour to save some cash.

Has anyone done this and does it look OK once done?

My brother did. Can't remember what paint he used but foam rollers are the way to go if you're doing it yourself, it makes it so much easier

Bluntness100 · 08/02/2019 17:53

I did it. When we first moved in, thr kitchen was over thirty years old. I painted the units cream. It looked fantastic, but it chips, after a couple of years and we replaced the kitchen. If you're selling I'd paint them.

Yes we did it recently as we were given a Howdens kitchen by my mother and wanted to refresh it. We used the spray can type and it looks good.

Great, thanks for all your help. Dh can get busy next week now Smile

Yes. We prepped carefully and used melamine cupboard paint. Very successful.

I used eggshell on wooden cupboards - looked great

Bluesheep8 · 10/02/2019 14:01

We had ours done by a decorator. Any areas that get damaged from wear and tear, we just touch up.

Yep. With F&B but primed with BIN primer, great stuff. Agree with pp - foam rollers are the way to go.

AdoreTheBeach · 10/02/2019 21:00

I painted mine. Primed with Autentico primer then painted with Autentico Versante Matt. Waterproof, fully washable, high scratch resistant and has a UV filter as well as environmentally friendly, completely safe to use in your home both in relation to VOC and EN71-3

My DH did with spray paint and without taking any thing out the cupboards or off the counters. He is a fool!

Cobmum · 10/02/2019 22:28

That looks gorgeous @AdoreTheBeach. Love your lights too! Where are they from please?

AdoreTheBeach · 10/02/2019 23:27

Hi cobmum. The lights are from John Lewis.

Miscella · 11/02/2019 00:11

Adorethebeach - your kitchen looks gorgeous. What colors did you use please? I’m thinking of painting my cupboards and the paint you used sounds as if it is just what I need, love the grey you’ve used.

Cobmum · 11/02/2019 21:19

‘@AdoreTheBeach’ don’t suppose you’re in Surrey and can come paint my units?????

dontcallmelen · 11/02/2019 21:30

I have painted mine a few times, most recently with Mylands eggshell paint, covers superbly very easy to work with & very hard wearing.

AdoreTheBeach · 12/02/2019 06:53

‘@miscella’ the paint I used was Autentico Versante Matt colour silver for the run of cabinets along the wall and Versante Matt colour Pigeon grey for the island. The walls are painted in Autentico velvet paint colour pebbles. These paints (same colours) also come in an Eggshell, have all the same properties as the Versante Matt paint only with a 15% sheen.

‘@cobmum’ yes, I’m in Surrey, yes, I can paint your kitchen but I can also teach you how to do it too. If your nom de plume is geographic, you’re very close by.

That looks really lovely Lovethebeach, great job. How long ago did you do it and how has it stood up so far? It’s hard to see reviews about its durability at the moment as not much on it other than from those who sell it.

I’m in the middle of doing a fair few doors. First lot are Johnstone’s oil eggshell matched to Farrow and Ball on Zinsser 123 primer . Withstood moving in car better than I thought, one slight scratch. Some are wood but some melamine and pleasantly surprised at how the melamine has gone.

Next batch will be Mylands eggshell on Zinsser as done with waiting for the oil eggshell to dry. I have a pot for front door and have done a tester patch with it and so far it’s is really good, better than the Little Greene Eggshell to apply. Saw this thread on a professional painter’s forum www.painterspitstop.com/threads/mylands-waterbased-eggshell.4874/ Which looked very encouraging watching the guy scrape the sample as am after something with maximum durability.

Didn’t read down to the bottom of the Mylands thread until now, seems you love it or hate it!

Cobmum · 12/02/2019 08:37

@AdoreTheBeach how long did it take you to paint yours please as I think I may have a similar number of cupboards. Huge thanks!

AdoreTheBeach · 12/02/2019 09:03

Hi. This whole procrss took me two weeks of long days painting (I paint by hand, not spraying, using both a roller and paint brush) this past summer, so paint dried relatively quickly. I also sand for a key, thoroughly clean and prime before painting to ensure durability and smooth finish. I did also use a carpenter to change the handles (which i sourced).

Miscella · 12/02/2019 22:15

Thanks adoreabeach, it looks great - hope mine will look as nice when I get round to it!

Painting kitchen cupboards and drawer fronts is very easy.
Thoroughly clean doors and drawers.
Remove all furniture from faces.
Lightly sand faces of units.
Apply a coat of adhesion primer ie Zinserr or blockade.
And then apply 2 - 3 coats of your desired colour and finish.
Use a 4" mini roller and use a good laying off brush to brush over when you roll areas.

I painted mine last year using Wilkos cupboard paint ( egg shell blue ).
It is about £10 a tin , i used 2 tins for 10 doors and 3 draws ,
It has a very high VOC . It still looks new a year later.

I also recovered my worktops with Wilkos plastic laminate which has made a huge difference to the look of my kitchen , i think its about £5 a roll. It is fairly easy to use but a bit fiddly in corners . Make sure your worktops a very very clean , and dry .

This is the change it made to my tiny kitchen .
