We have a brown carpet (previous owners) and a brown sofa. Which colours should I go for to complement the browns when choosing curtains?

Well brown, whilst boring, is a great colour in a way because it's a natural one and as a result, you can choose almost anything and it will look good.

I advise you to look on Pinterest for images of rooms which you love and create a board of them. Then look for things in common...eg do you always choose rooms which have a Bohemian feel or maybe you always choose rooms with contemporary decor and pale colours....

Then look at the colours in the rooms you like and try to emulate them.

Brown is a good base for any colour combo.

Think about the 60-30-10 rule.

The idea of that is that 60% of your colour in any given room should be one colour....30% another and 10% another.

The 60% is large scale items...in your case, the carpet and sofas. That leaves walls and other decor for eg. cushions, lamps, pictures on the wall to fill the 30%...and accent colours with the remaining 10%.

A good look might be warm reds/orange tones for the walls and cushions. with an accent colour (10%) of something more stand-out. Black or teal might work.

Sounds odd...but often looks great.

OTher combos might be 30% teals and greens and 10% bright pink.

Google image the rule.

I've seen a fresh green with brown lately and think it looks great.

Thank you for your responses. They give me a good idea on where to start.
