Navy painted wall in living room?

Our living room is about 19ft long by 12ft wide, we do get a lot of light in as there are patio doors at one end that lead out on the the garden & a good sized window at the opposite end. At the moment the walls are painted white, with the exception of one wall that has a pale grey brick effect wallpaper on. I'm thinking of taking the paper down & painting the wall in a navy blue colour. Only it's a bare wall, there isn't anything against it, no pictures hung or mirror, only the electric fire. Would it look odd with nothing on or against such a strong colour? I'd like to do it & have seen some lovely pictures on Pinterest but just afraid of taking some good wallpaper down & screwing it up!

Hi, I have painted one of my living room walls in Farrow and Ball’s Railings, a blue/black. I love it! I don’t think I can add a photo here so have a look at my website and you’ll see the photos of my living room. Hope this helps, Lisa x

Lisa, that looks amazing 😍 It makes me want to tear down my wallpaper right now 😂, only I don't think my DH will be too pleased! (We've only had it up about 10 months) I've been obsessing (in secret) about having a dark blue accent wall in the last week i must have saved at least a hundred pins on Pinterest!

I also like the look of Breton Blue by Dulux but I can't find it anywhere, I looked in homebase and no sample pots, looked online & can't seem to find any retailers that sell it. I wonder if it's an old shade?

Farrow & Ball colours look amazing (like the colour you have) but they are quite pricey.

Oh thank you! I haven’t seen brenton blue. What you can do is get the shade you want colour matched in Valpar paint from B&Q. I can vouch for their paint, I’ve used in the kids bedrooms and its a good quality paint.

Fannyfanakerpants · 03/09/2018 21:30

I decided I wanted a grown up bedroom so painted everything white. My husband didn't like it so wanted a navy wall. We went for Paint Library 'plimsol' which was the darkest navy I could find, darker than the F&B. I have to admit, I love it. I've covered it in big cut glass mirrors.

I have a navy blue wall in my bedroom. I love it!! I can't remember which paint though!! It's a b and q one...possibly maritime??

motortroll · 03/09/2018 21:56

I have it paired with 2 mink walls and feature wall with geometric paper.

MrBennOfFestiveRoad · 03/09/2018 22:18

I think that Dulux have discontinued Breton Blue, unfortunately. I am currently considering using Little Greene Woad, which looks fairly similar, in my hallway.

StormyLovesOdd · 04/09/2018 12:36

Do it, I’ve just painted one wall of my lounge navy and I love it, can’t stop looking at it Grin. My lounge is north facing and I was a bit worried it would look dark but it just makes it look lovely and cozy

Stormy, that looks really really good, I'm so jealous! What brand/shade of navy is it? If it was just me I'd have the wallpaper ripped down by now & the paint slapped on the wall! You see we've only had this wallpaper (just on the one wall) up for about 9/10 months & it was me that originally wanted it doing, i wanted it for ages & if I said to DH now that I want to rip it down & paint the wall, he'll just say no, no, I'm not having you change your mind again! ......I may just have to have a little accident with the wallpaper, but how? 🤔

Right. So I hate feature walls and would just do the whole room in your place but if you must feature wall then I would do as follows. Paint the feature wall a dark inky blue as opposed to navy and hang so large silver or brass edges mirrors. Paint the other walls a very pale almost white blue with a hint of grey. Keep the floor light. Another alternative would be half heighr colours. Wood panelling in white/afore mentioned almost white on the bottom with dark blue on top. If the ceilings are high another suggestion is to paint all the walls blue but then place a skirting board an couple of feet bellow the ceiling and paint white from that point upwards. This will make the ceiling look even higher which, in combination with dark cool toned walls, will make the room look much bigger.

StormyLovesOdd · 04/09/2018 16:31

YouveGotToBeKidding - the blue wall is Dulux Saphire Salute, we need to give it another coat and neaten u the edges but I'm so pleased with it.

I did the same as you 😂😂 this is the second time I've decorated this year, my lounge was red and cream and very chintzy, I chose the paper and as soon as it was finished I absolutely hated it. However I am the one that does the decorating in our house so I just showed DH what I was doing and got on with it😁. Maybe you could have an accident with a mug of coffee and accidentally on purpose spill it all over the wall 😀

youvegottobekidding · 04/09/2018 18:45

Racecardriver, that sounds spectacular, but I've a rather large task on my hands at even suggesting 'it's just a case of ripping the wallpaper off & a lick of paint' to DH!

Stormy, I had my last wallpaper up for 3 and a half years so it wasn't too bad! DH actually hates wallpaper with a passion & it really took some persuasion to get him to agree to having this up, so this is why I think he'll just think I'm actually crackers now!

The whole house is painted white, apart from our bedroom which has some wallpaper on one wall, amazingly after 3 years, it's still up & I still like it & have no plans to change that!

Would the navy go with your existing wallpaper and paint the walls either/or one side instead?

ChishandFips33 · 05/09/2018 23:07

ChishandFips....That shade looks fab also.

So i've been to Homebase to get some samples and my goodness i really didn't think wanting a dark navy wall was so bloody difficult!!!

I don't know if its me, i i see colours differently or if i am being just picky or if i just like them all and i can't decide!

I know i want a navy blue, but i don't want a 'little boys bedroom' kind of blue, iukwim? Our living room is large (more length wise than width) and with patio doors at one end and a medium sized window at the other, is it flooded with light, so i'm afraid of going for what may seem a dark blue, but will actually end up looking 'royal blue' for most of the day!

So i got these samples and tried a patch:

Crown - Midnight Navy - quite bluey, probably more boys bedroom

Dulux Sapphire - rich navy, very bluey, like it though

Farrow and Ball Stiffkey Blue - As described, inky blue, but im not sure if i am seeing a slight teal tone to it , but i do like it

Farrow and Ball Railings - just looks black. I thought i may have seen more of the blue tone but no it just appears black.

So i think its between Dulux Sapphire Salute and F&B Stiffkey. At least DH is on board now, i talked him round Grin .

Haha - talked him round or wore him down?? Grin

Glad you've found a couple you like - you might just have to go for it before your DH changes his mind as over a bigger space it may look different again.

StormyLovesOdd · 06/09/2018 20:42

Yeah, do it quick before he changes his mind. It's only paint, if you hate it it's easy to paint over it

youvegottobekidding · 06/09/2018 21:20

Ha ha, I chose my moment to tell him of my intentions 😉 He was surprisingly in agreement with everything I said! 😁

However! He has said that he wants it in writing that once the wall is painted (and get this, he's even offered to get it professionally done - maybe he thinks my painting skills are not up to par!) that I will never ever say I want wallpaper again!!! 😂

He's seen the test patches & likes the stiffkey blue so I reckon that's the one we're going for. I better start stripping that wallpaper off before he does change his mind!

We painted our entire sitting room - walls and ceiling, radiators and wooden dividing pocket doors - stiffkey blue. I absolutely love it.

Because we did the ceiling as well it feels cavernous, rather than oppressive.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 06/09/2018 22:09

We've put Dulux Sapphire Salute on the accent walls in our study (the rest are Dulux Piano White), with mustard yellow soft furnishings and it looks awesome. So pleased with it. Go for it!

Sleepthief · 08/09/2018 07:08

I bought a tester pot of Breton Blue from the Dulux website over the summer and then went to Johnstone's, where they got the code from Dulux and made me up a pot. I'd be surprised if they've discontinued it since mid-August. It's lovely, by the way.

Treacletoots · 08/09/2018 07:10

We have Little Green Juniper Ash on two of our walls, a gorgeous slightly faded ink colour. It looks great with mustard or pinks

MrBennOfFestiveRoad · 08/09/2018 10:00

Sleepthief - it was out of stock everywhere when I was looking for it. Maybe it was a temporary problem, I hope so, as it looks like a really nice colour. I’m going to have to look again now.

youvegottobekidding · 09/09/2018 22:11

For those of you that have used F&B paint, particularly the darker shades like stiffkey blue, did you use their primer/undercoat or did you paint straight into a plain white wall - we were thinking of just painting it with a white (johnstones) emulsion first then painting it with stiffkey blue. The patch test came out ok on the wall, but that's obviously just a small area. Just wondering if you have to use the F&B primer with their paints?
