DS wants a RED bedroom, need to convince him it would be better as a feature wall

DS (6yr old) wants a full on Red bedroom. I think it will look like a cave and would normally only choose neutrals. So I would like the red to be contained to 1 wall (he has red curtains and grey & red bedding and I'm prepared to paint the trofast toy storage red too, so there would be red elsewhere in the room too). But he says he doesn't want "boring white/magnolia" on the other walls.

What colours can I put on the other walls that won't be overpowering, dark, too "in your face" or clash? Or how can I persuade him white or magnolia is best for the other walls?

Of course it will look ridiculous and awful! You don't need to convince him! He's 6!

Red and grey looks nice together....tell him he can have "some red" but don't talk about the details...he's a child and can't imagine what things will look like.

Paint the other walls grey....one wall red. And hang some red accessories on the grey walls. That will have impact and look impressive to him.

I feel kind of guilty because his sister is getting a fully light pink room (as she wanted) and we've had to be in rental with magnolia only for a few years.

Grey might please him without making it too dark though.

Tell him if he wants red then he pays! Who is the boss in your house.?... not you.

Just brush him off a bit....I know it's nice to involve them but they can't predict these things and you end up in pointless discussions and them feeling dissatisfied if you involve them too much.

Say "Oh yes, it's going to be a lot of red and some grey"

he can't imagine the finished product and when it's all complete he's bound to be happy.

Maybe get him more involved in finding some cool red things for the walls. A red clock for example...red themed poster to frame...

I agree with you. Dd wanted pink walls at a similar age but i persuaded her to have white walls with pink curtains and bedding instead

The darkest shade of grey you can get away with depending on the natural light in the room.

If it goes with the curtains, a red with a tinge of brown to it might be a bit less jarring to the eye than bright bright red.

I assumed he was 14 and was going to say let him do it.

He's right that magnolia will look shit with red though. Light grey is the way to go.

I'd paint it all pale grey and get some red wall stickers (a double decker bus perhaps and s London skyline in red). Then I'd add some curtains and bedding with elements of red. That would be plenty.

DS wanted the same at 10. We said one wall only. Also got red bedding and red/cream curtains and a red light fitting. It’s still the same 7 years on. Some of the furniture has changed now but colour scheme still the same. He picked a warm red with a tinge of brown - as BinkyandBunty said it’s not jarring.

Oh and other walls are magnolia! Wasn’t my choice but it looks ok.

He's right though magnolia is boring . Let him have the room he wants - his bedroom, his expression. It can always be repainted. My son had a painted orange room with 1 wall wallpaper. It looked amazing, and I want to recreate it in our new house.

DS has a bright red wall and we choose a bright pastel yellow (not washed out but not in your face) for the others

Red curtains, iron man wall sticker and red bedding complete it (his furniture is painted white though)

This one is supposedly pink, but it's only need to be a few shades darker to be red, and it looks great!

The key to having an all red room seems to be to have white and/or bright colours to go with it,

I'm not so keen on the darker shade in this, it feels a bit to grown up for a kids room, but it shows nicely how lots of white can tone down the effect - doesn't necessarily need to be white on a wall.

The orange & red wall look awesome together!

My son wanted an orange room. I suggested one white wall, to be snow for his wall stickers of penguins to live on. It actually looks fine. I think one wall a different colour is enough that it doesn’t feel too enclosed.

My DS has a red room. It looks great. He chose the colour when he was 7 when we first moved to this house, and isn't sick of it yet at 18!

It is an attic room, so 2 walls have white sloping ceiling to halfway, but still lots of red.

I'm a big believer in letting kids choose the colour of their own rooms, it's only paint.

My bedroom has 4 red walls. I'm with your son.
