Help... awful lounge

I need the leather couches to stay. I hate curtains but these patio doors face the TV so hard to see TV unless dark outside. So need curtains but what colour? Hate the bookshelves but very useful. Should I paint them or remove? Also need to change the rug. Any ideas would be fab please?

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but the stag's head on the chimney breast looks to be way too high - too close to the ceiling.

Would look so much better lower down.

And I agree with pps - definitely no TV over a fireplace. Looks tacky.... in my opinion anyway Grin

Love the room though!

NotDonna · 20/08/2018 22:23

wowfudge totally agree and DH has no say! And as someone else has said fireplace too tall for tv anyway.

pumpingRSI · 21/08/2018 07:32

Loving it, well done! Tvs don't belong as focal points on walls. You could get a simple tension curtain rail between French windows with a sheer cotton white curtain to reduce glare, but only pull across when needed.

Looks so much better already, like a French chateau! (Don't paint everything shabby chic tho!)

ProcrastinatingPingu · 21/08/2018 07:43

@NotDonna No? Sorry I'm a bit lost 😂

N0tfinished · 21/08/2018 08:43

I think the rug is the wrong shape. It needs to be more square rather than rectangular. More colour would be nice too.

Def pull out bookcases! More colour on walls. My heart says that lovely new cinnamon colour that's in shops now but my head says that's too close to 80's peach!

TV in alcove maybe? That nice green cabinet thing could be easily moved once bookcases are gone!

NotDonna · 21/08/2018 09:50

NotFinished Oh yes stag, pictures etc all wrong as just used existing wall hooks! Rug shape is perfect just needs turning around like I said up thread.
PumpingRSI hate shabby chic!!

Have you NC'd OP?

WhatsGoingOnEh · 21/08/2018 11:29

I think you could lose the bookshelves, they're not even half full and they're HUGE. If you wanted built-in shelves, I'd move the radiator (it's an easy/inexpensive job for a plumber) and install a wall of shelves in the niche.

What a lovely, lovely room! It's gorgeous.

RoseWhiteTips · 21/08/2018 11:56

Bookcases are for books. A room with books is dead.

RoseWhiteTips · 21/08/2018 11:56

Oops

...without books

IamPeas · 21/08/2018 12:22

Would this layout work OP? With a huge new rug and TV above fireplace and get rid of corner bookcase and lighten the other bookcases

TV over fire sounds like a way to get a sore neck.
Wrong height.
And agree it looks weird.

LiesLiesLiesLies · 23/08/2018 22:41

Thanks IamPeas the Piano is just temp - it’ll be going in another room once building work done. I’ve made this difficult for you all as there’s so much furniture that won’t be in this room. Sorry! We’ve literally just moved in so nothing is in its ‘home’ yet.
RoseWhiteTips we don’t need bookshelves in here as have an enormous bookcase in storage that’ll go in the new room with the Piano, (along with a ridiculous number of DHs books, —that I’m desperate to give to the charity shop—) and the games can go to the playroom. I’m a heathen and love a kindle Blush
I’ve decided the following-

  1. Bookcases pulled out
  2. little window bricked up
  3. remove radiator under window
  4. site TV in this corner
  5. sofas in L shape (ish)
  6. two traditional radiators on back wall kind of either side of radiators.
  7. huge new rug
  8. big coffee table (maybe)
  9. obviously re-paint
  10. hang artwork from storage With your help I’ve now got a plan to hopefully make awful lounge lovely Grin
