I am losing my mind!!

We bought our first house two years ago and have been slowly sorting bits out. I have no eye for decoration at all and DH is even worse. We’ve lived with temporary curtains and no nets for two years as the windows are an awkward shape and we just can’t decide what to do.

We had two companies quote for shutters but my mum was very negative and said they looked too rigid and ‘cold’ so I was really put off as they aren’t cheap either!

So finally decided to forgo a holiday this year and get it sorted properly. Splurged in John Lewis design service as really just wanted someone to tell me what would look best and get it done nicely.

So once again my mum is being really negative about what they’ve suggested and I honestly want to give up and just live with what we’ve got! So mumsnet hive mind can I have a quick straw poll:

  1. Do roman blinds look cheap and nasty?
  2. Do the window dressings in the upstairs and downstairs front rooms have to match? (Style wise, not necessarily fabric i.e both curtains or both blinds)

Sorry for long post!

Stop telling your mum at the ideas stage. Just let her see what you decide when it's done. She's imposing her views on you.

We have plantation shutters which I love. I prefer them to blinds as they're more substantial. But it's up to you. Good luck!

Have what you like. Vertical blinds and Venetian blinds look cheap imo - Roman blinds are much nicer. It really doesn't matter if you have a different window treatment in every window on every elevation of your house. Stop asking your mum's advice as she's not helping!

I agree stop asking your mum, I have half shutters & curtains which I think look good, also have roman blinds in the kitchen & back bedroom definitely don’t look cheap.
Must admit I’m not keen on vertical blinds.

I like Roman blinds and shutters very much. No need to have upstairs and downstairs windows matching but I would go for a matching backing (so all white or all cream) whether they’re a mix of curtains & blinds or not.

I have wooden venetians and curtains downstairs. Mainly just roller blinds upstairs. Not a big fan of curtains.

I have wooden white venetian blinds all over my house. They don't look cheap against pale walls and original wood flooring. Get whatever you like, and don't be influenced by other people. I often use the website 'Houzz' for ideas.

Ooh I love shutters, closely followed by Roman blinds. And no need to match upstairs and downstairs. Your mum probably has a dated looking house?

Thanks all! I know I need to stop asking my mum (I’m 36 after all!!) my husband just stares blankly and nods whenever I ask and it’s so expensive I was really just trying to get another opinion! Ironically her house is a total mish mash and hideously cluttered!

Right Roman blinds upstairs and curtains downstairs it is! Let’s hope it doesn’t look crap and she doesn’t get to say I told you so!

I like my vertical blinds (and they weren't cheap!)
