Bathroom soap niche cost?

How much is too much to spend on those snazzy little holes in the wall for soaps, etc? Our builder/tile guy is quoting 400. I think it's because he says the tile work is very tricky to get it all just so and that the work would require actually chipping it out of the breeze block wall. Is that what these sorts of things typically cost?? I'd love to have one as they seem to make the bathroom much neater (no shampoo, etc on the floor) but is it worth that price?

Is a shelf or cabinet not a more viable option? £400 for that doesn't sound too out of the way, especially if you're talking a couple of days work and he's a well regarded tradesman.
I think It would be worth getting another quote from someone who's work you can see or a reliable recommendation from a friend, perhaps, just to make sure. Not all tilers are made equal!
