What would you do to this part of the kitchen (pics)

I had my kitchen done last year and I'm happy with it but hate this extractor fan and extractor fans in general. The builder made out like I have to have one and I didn't question it but I've never used it and the kitchen is very well ventilated, and also the rest of the kitchen is very traditional with an aga and period features on the other side.

I'm thinking of getting rid of the extractor, making good the wall, and having a big shelf just above the windows (like the one over the aga) to put the copper pans on, and having tiles above the hob, with a rail to hang utensils on.

What do you guys think? Open to other suggestions

I would probably tile the area between the job and the extractor fan - maybe metro tiles in something like a herringbone pattern or Moroccan type tiles if you want more colour. I think white metro tiles with grey grout is fashionable atm, but is also a classic design that shouldn’t age.

I wouldn’t be without an extractor fan myself and doing that would link it into the kitchen more, rather than having it floating above.

Placemarking. I have a very similar kitchen (and identical oven I think!) and I need to liven it up somehow.

I actually think it looks pretty good and finished the wall off nicely.

Hi, in my last house I tiled behind the hob and the grout got very dirty, greasy and difficult to clean. I’m planning on a panel this time to match the worktop for easy cleaning. Check building regs for extractor rules, you might only need if no opening window? Presume in winter you use the aga and it vents straight outside?

I really don't want a backsplash I hate them! Too modern!

Will definitely be removing extractor and putting up shelf

I have a similar kitchen with no extractor above the hob and have thought about putting something above it, as with our high ceilings it’s a really big empty space - shelf or rail but am undecided. In your kitchen, I would have black bevelled metro tiles with black grout, which wouldn’t get marked from cooking.

They are quite useful for the light though/when you make smelly food. It doesn't have to look like an extractor.

I wouldn't tile, I think metro tiles are dated now.

I would get rid of all the clutter, put Roman blinds up at the windows and have a picture shelf with a couple of really eye catching pieces.

Yeah I wouldn't do metro tiles I like them but they will date quite quickly.

I love the clutter not the stack of colouring stuff but I like having all the utensils and oils etc where I can reach them. I only want a shelf so I can put my nice pans on them

I only had the blinds done not long ago and they were a bad decision, but I paid a lot for them so have to leave them for a while but Roman blinds would definitely look better I agree

Neff make an induction hob that includes extraction! It's called a venting hob, cool idea

Hi. New to this forum and would appreciate any advice. I am currently converting an annexe to a kitchen/dining/family room. I've decided to put my hob on the island so I can cook facing the people in the room. Has anyone ever regretted putting a hob on an island? Also I want to buy the Neff induction hob with built in vented extractor. Does anyone have one of these? Are they good and are they noisy. Thank you.

@TraceyBohea, I'm a designer and have done it lots of times - works great. Rule of thumb, try to create a triangle between the hob, sink and fridge - it's the most efficient way for food prep (you can google Kitchen Triangle). Never used Neff though, sorry.
