Need to refurnish a bedroom on the cheap as we may be looking to sell the house next year.
Can anyone recommend stuff that doesn't look too hideous and held together with safety pins?

One person's cheap'n'cheerful is another person's expensive, is another person's "cheap nasty tat, wouldn't touch it with a bargepole".

So with that huge disclaimer - and not knowing if this is for adult or child - I'm going for Ikea Hemnes. The chests of drawers are great for the money. They also have pine beds for very little which you could use as is or paint white. There's a good selection of white wooden bedframes quite cheaply from big online bed specialists, or if price is the driver, we've bought a basic pine bed frame on ebay (flat pack, new) for £30. Or get a second hand wooden one and paint it. I reckon if you mix and match different white pieces, some of which are actual wood, it can look bright and fresh without looking like it came from an ikea catalogue.

I'd second IKEA hemnes

I was going to say Hemnes as well. There's also a very similar chest of drawers (i think only in white though) called Koppang which is a bit cheaper.

Are you / DH handy? We have often bought bedframes second hand and customised them (for storage for children) and painted them. Or, you can buy cheap metal beds and spray them with metallic paints to get a bronze / pewter type effect.

Roman blinds look very stylish and are a doddle to make (unless your window is quite big then its worth paying someone to make them professionally - just bought a very big one from Blinds2go and very impressed with them.

TK Maxx / Homesense for new bedding and cushions. Lick of paint and an oversized mirror.

There are quite a few companies that make mdf wardrobe doors too if you can make use of the actual carcasses and maybe get new doors fitted.
