Decorating - am I being ripped off?

Can anyone help me? These prices seem incredibly steep, but I"m having a huge problem finding anyone who'll even bother to give me a quote.

It's one smallish bedroom in a victorian semi cottage. Measurements are 12' 7" x 10' 11" (3.84m x 3.33m).

Job 1: remove small and very flimsy built in wardrobe and make good. make good a few other holes (one where pipes were put, one where previous owners ripped out curtain pole). Paint walls and ceiling with paint supplied by me. Rehang door which DCat somehow managed to take off its hinges.

only quote received - £975

Job 2: take up knackered floorboards and replace with soft wood tongue and groove which have already been primed.

£900+vat inc, materials but not skirting boards which will be extra.

I'm in Suffolk which isn't (shouldn't be?) super expensive.

Excellent news OP Smile The new quotes sound much better.

I do think tradesmen sometimes over price when they just can't be bothered. We had a quote for 000s once to open up access to a void and create a cupboard! I'm sure he was just really busy and CBA (We decided an Ikea chest of drawers would suffice Grin )

Hey, just got dh to do a rough 'quote' for you. He said that the price for the bedroom is a little high. Maybe £600 or £650. He said £375 for a quick coat of paint is ok but you might not get loads of prep done for that.

Hope this helps x

please thank your DH Chelle - fingers crossed he fills all the holes in. The rest I can write off as 'artisan' perhaps? Smile

I've heard it said before about silly quotes when they don't want to do it - but then why on earth bother in the first place? A waste of time for both of us.

And yes, I also find myself using 'we' when I have tradespeople here. Bloody well shouldn't have to though, should we.

It's annoying as I gives tradesmen a bad name. My dh is lovely and the little old ladies offer him so much cake and keep trying to pay him in advance! But then lots of his customers he's had since he was 19 and starting out as self employed so they are a little maternal over him Grin

Let me know how it goes

Seems steep to me tbh but that said I've just paid over £100K+ for some fool to destroy my home so what do I know lol.
