This will be my bathroom in soon to-be rental house. Can't change tiles etc. What should I do?! It's pretty horrendous! Tips please...

Set fire to the house.

If that's not an option, how about introducing one colour eg coral pink. Do a bath mat and some curtains. You could make some with this fabric to make it look like an intentional colour scheme.

I quite like it Grin

Well no... I don't like the tiles. I don't like the curtains. I hate the lampshade, and the orange wood bath panel, window sill and loo seat. And I'm not thrilled about that totally tropical shower screen. But honestly, I think the avocado suite is probably the least of your problems!

Would your landlord countenance you repaint ing the bath panel and window sill, and replacing the loo seat?

minkah · 05/08/2014 11:29

The avocado suite is the best thing about that room.

Forget the bathroom just resolve to enjoy the beautiful outlook whenever you go in there. You'll soon get used to the decor once you're in. Smile

Would you be allowed to repaint the bath panel?

Or embrace the avocado and have a huge poster of a bowl of guacamole on the wall. Grin

Replacing the bath panel and toilet seat would not be a significant cost and would significantly reduce the current effect. I had a joiner replace a tatty bath panel with a very neutral wooden one and the whole thing cost me about £100.

I would get some retro bits e.g. Orla Kiely accessories which would kind of update the retro effect.

These suggestions are great, AND had me laughing quite hard at some points. Thanks!

Orla Kiely would fit right in, although it can be a bit pricey.

If I couldn't change it I'd work with it on an if you can't beat 'em, join 'em basis.

Enquire if you could paint the bath panel, window sill and possibly curtain rail.
Buy yourself a new toilet seat

and go with something like the Gurine or the Stockholm big leaves fabrics from the Ikea link. The Stockholm comes in a bright green or a more sober grey colour way.

You should really have a sealed light fitting approved for bathroom use, this one's not expensive

Is that carpet on the floor?

I wonder could you roll it up, lay something else and relay the catpet before you leave.

Icelollycraving · 08/08/2014 09:27

Embrace it. Get some retro bathroom accessories or Orla Kielly as pp said. That's what jumped out at me immediately.

Redfox · 08/08/2014 09:37

Yep my bathroom is avocado op and I don't even notice it now. And I even have the avocado path panel! But your bathroom is nicer and bigger and has a window and a nicer shower screen than mine so yeah embrace it .....!

AMumInScotland · 08/08/2014 10:16

We have that exact same suite, with the additional of the matching avocado bath panel and 70's white & avocado tiles floor to ceiling!

We've gone with bright yellow accessories to cheer the place up and take the eye away from the avocado a bit, but I'm also liking the coral pink suggestion.

As others have said, if you could replace the bath panel and the loo seat, that would help.

As a minimum, the curtains and light shade could be swapped for something more lively, pluse some matching ornaments and maybe replace your towels to fit in with the whole scheme?

Icelollycraving · 08/08/2014 10:54

What about nice white towels & some leafy green plants?

Turquoiseblue · 08/08/2014 11:00

Ugh, we have the same problem. My solution
1 new toilet seat
2 keep it clean so even though it looks tired you know it s hygienic - that meant a really deep clean (steam and bleach) at the start and every so often!

  1. New accessories - bath mat, new fluffy towels, tooth brush holder, baskets and holders for toiletries etx.

Any every time you enter it - deep breath and remind yourself it s temporary and a fantastic motivation to get one s own place Wink (well that s my personal mottoWink)

Sandthorn · 09/08/2014 19:17

D'you know what... I think I'd actually stash the bath panel, bog seat, curtains and curtain rail in the attic, replace the bath panel and loo seat, and paint the windowsill white. If the landlord objects, you can put it all back to its orange-glory at the end of your tenancy, but I bet they don't!

newnameforanewstart · 09/08/2014 19:31

I´d have a chat to the landlord and ask if at your own expense you can paint or sand and seal with clear vanish, the bath panel and window sill.

Remove loo seat and put in safe place for re fitting in future.
Remove glass panel. or if not possible then cover with the removable etched glass film at least it won´t have flowers on it
remove curtains and curtain rod - wtf btw its totally useless. Keep safe with loo seat.
replace lamp shade for something else.

add nice bath mat, flufly towels, etc.

As a btw, I used to move into my flats and redecorate, then put everything back to the original if requested by the landlord when I moved out. Not one single landlord ask me to do so, they were normally made up that I had put myself out to keep the flats in good order, I had carpets professionally cleaned and made the best effort I could for viewings etc. this was YEARS ago though!!!

I think the main thing is the lighting, I would get rid of that and get a nice crystal one. I would also get a nice rug to cover up as much of the floor as possible. I also think putting a herb plant will give the room a nicer feel.
But the main thing I would change is the lighting (you could also get a wall mirror and put that in the corner).
