I've just remembered that I hate flying,

And I'm going on holiday in two weeks.

I haven't flown for some time and I'm particuarly uptight at the moment.I'm a born worrier and I'd appreciate some tips on how to get through the flights, which thankfully will take just 90 minutes or so.

My cousin, who is 14, is going with me and I can't take any form of sedative as I want to be fully compos mentis while I'm I'm responsible for her welfare.

I'd like to project an air of calmness even if I'm really terrified so any tips/advice would be much appreciated.

TIA

rescue remedy?
or double gin and tonics

LetThereBeRock · 29/06/2010 00:13

It doesn't help that I'm flying with an airline that I've never flown with before. That makes me even more nervous.

And that I don't want to go on holiday at all now. I'm regretting booking it,not just because of the flying.

I'd love a holiday - I'll go instead. You look after my two, dog and DH and I'll look after your cousin
Where are you going? 90 minutes really isn't long.
What airline?

LetThereBeRock · 29/06/2010 00:23

I'd happily take care of your dh,dog and dcs instead, but only if I can look after them in my own home.

There are a few reasons, which I won't go into, why I regret booking this holiday.

I'm going to Disneyland,Paris. Not for long,just 5 days,and with Easyjet.I usually fly BA.

okay Smac backs out now!!!! There is no way on earth I'd go to Disneyland, sorry.
I've flown Easyjet, but not for about 2 years now. It's cheap and cheerful but their pilots are still qualified you know
Do you find the groomedness of the air hostesses reassuring with BA?
Just wondering what in your head makes BA okay but Easyjet not? The price of the ticket does not reflect the reliability of the plane. They are all safety checked.
You will be fine.

Pingpong · 29/06/2010 00:31

I'm off now but hope someone has more constructive advice for you as I'm sure your cousin would be gutted if you backed out now.
Honestly rescue remedy is good for these sort of things, if you are starting to feel anxious about it already you could try taking some and see if it makes you feel any better.

LetThereBeRock · 29/06/2010 00:32

It's not the price, just the familarity,or lack of.

If I was used to flying with Easyjet then I'd worry about flying with BA.

I have dyspraxia so I'm much more comfortable with familiar things and routines. I'm generally quite anxious and can struggle with changes such as this.

I didn't book with BA this time as they didn't have a direct flight available.

Try a beta blocker, helps with the panicky feeling

GeekOfTheWeek · 02/07/2010 12:24

Diazepam (valium)

Try it before you go so you know how much you need.

I take 5mg, chilled but perfectly able to function. They come in 2mg tablets too if you are worried about being too sedate.

Hi LetTherebeRock. If it reassures you, Easyjet has one of the youngest fleets of aircraft in the industry (I looked this up for work a short while ago). Other than being strangely orange EasyJet is a very respectable airline.

Have you booked priority boarding? If you can change your booking to add this then I would recommend it. This will get you on the plane soonest and mean that you and your cousin can pick your seats then get settled.

I am not an optimistic flyer (I dont worry I just dont expect it to end well!). When I am on board I always read the safety card, pay attention to the safety announcement and check that I have a life jacket (every time!). All of this makes me feel in charge of my surroundings.

I hope you have a lovely time
