My dad has had a sore knee for weeks and now his calf is swollen and it really hurts him to walk and he is havin trouble sleeping due to pain. DVT has been ruled out by drs.

He is due to go on hols this weekend on a hol that involves walking (their choice to walk) and he does not want to go.

Dr said it would be better by now, but it isn't. but they are worried they won't get money back. Will prob cancel anyway and lose money.

any advice appreciated.

Are they insured? Need to check details as many insurance policies contain clauses for cancellation cover.

If no insurance then I doubt they will get money back as it is not the tour operator/hotel's fault.

I work in a travel company and it would be extremely unlikely they would get there money back as the travel company have no obligation too. And would have paid out money to suppliers already however it would be worth talking nicely to them to them and see if anyway they can postpone it or get a credit note for some or it.

no I forgot to say he was insured but was not sure if medical reasons are bad enough to claim money back

I would imagine that he would need to get some medical proof - e.g. a letter from his doctor advising him not to walk on the leg for more than 20 minutes or so. The insurance docs should give some indication of what is needed - we can't say definitively.

Insurance companies would do anything to wiggle out of it though in my experience. If it was a specific walking holiday than maybe but if it was for example a city break where they planned to walk around the city lots I would doubt it they would say you can still go just not walk anywhere
