Am considering checking in on-line but am wondering what, if any, impact it would have if the flight was cancelled or delayed because of the ash? Anyone know? TIA

Can;t see that it would make a difference. You are booked on the flight. It will either go or be cancelled. If it is cancelled or delayed it is still the flight you are booked on.

DB and family got stuck here for a day, having booked with Ryanair. They only found out the night before that the ash had started again so they had already checked in online and, as a result, they weren't able to change to another flight online which apparently they could have done if they had checked in. They had to wait until the following morning and rebook through the call centre. Don't know if it varies from airline to airline.

If they hadn't checked in do you mean annh?

Yes that's what I am worried about, that and whether it affects the "free transfer or refund" option?

Oops sorry, yes, I meant if they hadn't checked in! It didn't affect their ability to transfer at no cost (even with Ryanair!) but not sure about a refund if they had wanted one.
