castles in north wales

We want to take DCs(7 and 4) to a see a castle. Which would you recommend caenarfon or conwy?

Conwy is a very nice castle as you can walk around the town walls too. I don't really know Caernarfon. Where abouts are you?

Thanks for reply. We're in north west so not too far away. I remember being v impressed with Caernarfon as a child but Conwy closer for a day trip.

I was going to suggest Beeston Castle. It's completely ruined, but in a fantastic position on top of a hill and you can see for miles (Snowdon on a clear day, as far as the Peaks in the other direction). It's much closer than Conwy too (depending on where you are!). It all depends on how intact your castle needs to be!

I haven't been to Conwy but DD and DH rated it highly. Caernarfon vg too though - they shouldn't be disappointed either way.

Both Caernarfon and Conwy are great examples of castles. Conwy town's nice to walk round too and I think Caernarfon has been done up a bit (was there on Saturday but only saw Morrisons).

We went to Conwy last year, my DS (6) then loved it, we were there most of the day with him playing at being a knight! Wasn't too busy either and it was in the summer hols.

Caernarfon's definitely been 'done up'. DH and I had avoided north wales since going there about 25 years ago when it was dire. We were very pleasantly suprised when we went back a couple of years ago.

We went to Conwy today and had a great day. The dc's loved the castle and walking round the town walls. The weather was great and the views from the castle are fab. The town is nice too. Thanks.
