Hi,

Hoping to visit Skomer Island in April, me to do a bit of birdwatching, DH to do a bit of photography. Daytrip from the mainland. Am I crazy to want to do this with a almost 6 month-old? Have never been, have no idea what to expect, had a look on their website (v helpful), but any input/advice would be welcome if you have ever been or done something similar.

TIA

Hello
I went there at the end of August last year with my 3.4 dd and 6 week old ds.
It was a lovely day out. Took baby in sling and he stayed in it the whole day other than feeds. he was still a sleepy newborn though and fairly easy to carry as still not very heavy.
The boat ride there is lovely and the island beautiful with wonderful views. There is very little shelter though so you would definately need to check the weather forecast before planning your trip.
Have fun!

It's gorgeous! But it will be bleak if the weather is bad. I spent a week there on an archaeology field trip. There is some amazing stuff. One night our tutor took me out to see the sheerwaters - they were so tame you could actually stroke them in their burrowns - they made a funny little ticking purring noise. So lovely.

Have fun. IIRC though there is nothing there. Make sure you take everything you need.

I did it donkey's years ago, so it may all be different now, but I think it would actually be easier with a 6 month-old than with an older toddler. IIRC, you have to stick quite closely to the paths, esp at breeding/nesting time, which could be problematic with a more wayward older child.

As miw says, it's fairly exposed, so check the forecast.

Was amazing to see the puffins at such close quarters though all coming in to feed their chicks.
