What's it like? Just booked a beautiful barn conversion for half term, views of beach, 5 mins walk to beach and am a bit scared now after reading other comments about Barmouth!!

Seems like there's loads to do in the area too.

Have I got it completely wrong?

Ummmm, well, it is a lovely area but Barmouth is a shit hole.

I thought it might be like Tenby (Welsh seaside resort, lovely beaches etc). The beach was lovely but the 'resort' is a dump, think 10x worse than Weston Super Mud.

We went to Harlech, Portmeirion, Snowdonia etc whilst we were there. We drove from the West Country, it rained every day and if it didn't take 6 hours to get there, I would have driven home.

hotpotmama · 05/02/2010 13:14

Ok thanks Saggy, may try and get out of it then. Will have to search for something else for Feb half term now!

Sorry to be bearer of bad news.

The Snowdonia National Park is a beautiful area though, just not Barmouth.

One thing we found was that all though there is a fair amount to do in the area, it takes a long time to get anywhere because of the road network. For example we went to Electric Mountain which must have taken over an hour and a half to get to and then we couldn't do the tour as we could not go down with a two year old.

It did rain a hell of a lot and there wasn't really anything we could do locally with an 8, 5 and 2 year old.

We did visit some caves, I think called King Arthurs, and that was interesting and we didn't get so wet as inside.

There were no nice cafes, no nice shops, there was one shop that sold Regatta stuff but the woman was a snotty cow, god it was awful....

hotpotmama · 06/02/2010 09:17

Its ok have cancelled the barn now and they are ok about it. Will just start my search all over again!

Thanks for your honesty cos don't want to holiday in a dump!!!

If I can save anyone from the hell that is Barmouth I will endeavour to do so!

I've a friend near Conwy and apparantly it is much nicer there if you want to be in North Wales.

hotpotmama · 07/02/2010 21:05

Yes, its lovely there, just wanted to try somewhere different in Wales, but not somewhere grotty!

OP posts:
saggyhairyarse · 08/02/2010 13:27

Tenby is nice!

hotpotmama · 08/02/2010 20:54

Yes have already been there tho, like going to new places.

Am looking at Holland now!!

Funnily enough we are going in April!

hotpotmama · 10/02/2010 21:47

Really? Where? Looking at Port Zelande (center parcs).

That would be a bit weird if you were off there!

if you go to Wales, just expect it to rain a lot and then you won't be disappointed

saggyhairyarse · 11/02/2010 12:38

LOL AF!

We are going to Duinrell with Eurocamp:

www.eurocamp.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=Campsites.ResortOverView&ver=1&Mastercode=43

My 8 year old son picked it! The bonus was it is only costing us £185 for a week inc ferry with early booking and previous custoemr discounts - bargain!

hotpotmama · 11/02/2010 13:08

I've looked at Duinrell. Who did you book it with to get it for that price?

Wish my 7 year old would sort out our half term break as am sick of looking now!

saggyhairyarse · 12/02/2010 22:27

I booked with Eurocamp.

It is a bit of a family past time, perusing sites for the next hoiday. Thank god they have yet to find Disney....

SpottyMuldoon · 12/02/2010 22:41

I bloody love Barmouth but then I'm not used to nice holidays. Went to Cromer last year and thought it was v posh. V Mumsnet.

Heated · 12/02/2010 22:51

Have been to a place about 5 miles up from Barmouth on holiday & can only say we left early.

Also been to Duinrell in Holland which was very nice - went out on the seacat which was quick but bumpy and back by ferry with cabin, shower and free meal for the same price which was slower but sorted dh out for the drive home.

Was looking at these for a UK cottage and have also recently holidayed in Blakeney Norfolk using this company but also consideredthese too which was fab.

usualsuspect · 12/02/2010 22:52

I love Barmouth

hotpotmama · 13/02/2010 18:01

Thanks saggy.

Heated we have used Premier cottages before.

Tried to book a place in Cornwall with them but the owner wouldn't take my booking as DS3 who will be 2yrs and 24 days at half term not allowed to sleep in cot for H&S reasons in case he falls out!Said he had to be under 2. What a div.

Wouln't even let me take a travel cot, loon. Glad we not going now, god knows what he would think when my 3 boys invaded his pool!

We stayed in a very nice farm cottage near Caernarvon last year. It was easy to get to various places from there, round the coastal road and over to Anglesey - not sure what it would be like in Feb but lovely in summer.

hotpotmama · 15/02/2010 09:35

Grimma, yes its a good place to stay near Caernarvon, we have stayed there before. Just want to go somewhere different.

We have now booked a barn in South Devon and am just relieved that I don't need to search the internet for places anymore!!

Oh I remember having a really nice meal in Barmouth once. Don't remember much else about it. Lovely area though

deaddei · 19/02/2010 15:51

Well done for getting out of Barmouth- it looks great from a distance- but it's shite. But Aberdovey is lovely- beautiful countryside, peaceful. It just rains a lot.
