Advice re breaking journey to West Cornwall

We are in Yorkshire and went to West Cornwall for a week at May half term last year. The DCs loved it so much we have been persuaded to book our main two weeks during the school summer holidays for there this year.

Last year I booked a hotel in Bristol, which came up on the route finder as half way, to break the journey. The journey to Bristol took us considerably less time than the journey into Cornwall the next time and I presume it will be even worse in the summer.

Whereabouts should I be looking to book a hotel for this summer's overnight stop?

Interested in recommendations of where geographically (Exeter?) and also of any specifc hotels.

Thanks

What budget approx mf? There's plenty of hotels around Exeter, but are you heading A30 or A38 into Cornwall as there's some good hotels west of Exeter near both routes. Otherwise, what about stopping around Taunton. There's a couple of chain hotels within 30 seconds of the Taunton exit of the M5.

We've stayed twice now at the Taunton (Ruishton) Premier Inn (kids call it the Purple Palace ...!) which gets you about an hour further down the M5 than Bristol before you stop. Cheap family rooms, always very clean, and comfy beds, just off motorway so no faffing, pub/bar in garden so you can get dinner and breakfast (kids eat breakfast free if an adult buys it) and small playground in pub garden for people who've been stuck on the back seat of a car for hours .... Cheap, better than functional but not too grand with kids. There are several Premier Inns round Taunton so it must be a popular stop off point.

Sorry, missed these responses. Last year we stopped at a holiday inn express, think it was about £80. I don't think there is any benefit in spending a fortune as it is literally just somewhere to sleep.

Hi I just want to add a vote for premier inn. We stayed at cribbs causeway pi last year on way to Cornwall. Really made the start of the holiday. My dd loves staying in hotels. They gave her a bag with crayons colouring books and toys. Breakfast was good and friendly staff. We are doing this again this year. Also travellodge are good for a smaller budget as they have some special offers on. More basic BUT clean and tidy and just off the motorway again near Bristol. Enjoy your holiday.
