Hire cars - what will I need

Planning to go to Portugal in September and need to hire a vehicle big enough to transport 3 adults and 2 children (3yr old and 18 month old) in their car seats. MPVs look really expensive for the week so what would be the smallest but the most comfortable that we could look at? any thoughts or vehicle or a cheap hire company?

i think travelsupermarket have a hire car section where you can compare the prices of rental cars. we found europcar to be cheapest when we were abroad last. we hired a giant boat tho, so can't help you with that.

We've had a Ford Focus in Spain for 2 adults & 2 teenagers which was plenty big enough (but no car seats of course).

Cheapest decent size tend to be Renault Kangoo/Citroen Berlingo - not cool but loads of space & headroom (quite funky, I think, but it depends if you care how you look )
