We are thinking of going to Israel. Somewhere with good snorkelling. Anyone have any recommendations/reviews?

There's more to Israel than beaches and nightclubs, too. It's a fascinating country, full of history and culture.

I probably would have gone to SA during apartheid, yes - under the right circumstances. I wouldn't have lounged on the all-white beach taking cocktails from the 'coloured;' waitress, no. In fact, my husband, who is black and campaigned tirelessly against aparthied in the 80s, did go to SA several times in those days, to visit black and enlightened white saffy friends.

Life isn't black and white (excuse pun).

I am still in old Blighty but used to have to travel to Israel on business a fair bit.

Sorry, is there some kind of equasion between Israel today and 'pre-democracy' SA?

Israel is a democracy. A much better democracy than the UK too!

I've been to Israel several times over the years. Fascinating country. Eilat is a nice resort but not as good as sharm el sheik in Egypt. You can however do a day trip in Jordan and Petra from there which is well worth the visit. The Negev desert is v interesting, the Dead Sea and Masada are well worth it and I thought Jerusalem was amazing. I also visited the Golan Heights and slept on the banks of Galilee.. fantastic ?.However I would definitely not go with children under any circumstances, it is just not child friendly, everything shuts down on a Saturday and if your little DD or DS wants hot/food drink forget it. Also be prepared to be interrogated as you exit, they are very security conscious and can come across as suspicious and unfriendly. After my last visit over 7 years ago I reluctantly decided I wouldn?t go again there are just too many other places in the world where I feel more welcome as a visitor.

Personally, having visited many times on business, and also having had a very good insight to the country,it is isn't somewhee I would ever choose to go on holiday.
There are many more places in the world that are more beautiful,historical/interesting,safer and just nicer. This is just my personal opinion.
