Probably been asked before but what are the rules on car seats and taxis?

I'm not clear on what the rules are:

Can you take a (2 year old) child in a taxi without a car seat?

might be legal but still dangerous. If you are hiring a cab from home you could ask if they have a seat themselves.

I think for a tiny baby, bringing the rear facing car seat is an option... but I often use black cabs with DS (11 months) and he stays in his buggy.
