Cape Town accommodation in July/August with nearly 3 year old

Hi there,
DH and I plus our son (3 in August) are going to Cape Town at the end of July/beginning of August. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good place to stay?

I stayed at the Cullinan (sp) it was very nice.
But if you don't want a hotel what about a B and B - in South Africa their are some exceptional ones really luxurious and on subsequent trips we didn't bother with hotels .

We enjoyed the Victoria & Alfred Hotel on the Waterfront - lots to see and do there.

What kind of place do you want? Hotel or self catering; flashy or cheap and cheerful; near the beach with great views or city like? [bearing in mind it will not be beach weather]
