Hi,
We are moving back to NZ in April, flying Air NZ with a 1 night stopover in Hong Kong....any suggestions of a good, easy to get to, reasonably priced hotel in Hong Kong greatly appreciated.

The Wharney in Wan Chai fits all those criteria. It's modest but very cheap and clean. It's usually the one that Qantas package with their flights.

However, Hong Kong is rammed with very, very good hotels and they are not all that expensive. Try some websites for discounts to rack rates on the Island Shangri-La or the Grand Hyatt.

My parents rave about the YMCA in Hong Kong....seriously.

I hvae no idea the exact location though.

There are several Ys so do be sure to book the Salisbury Rd one. And you have to specify a harbour view room or you'll get an insalubrious view of the building sites of Tsim Sha Tsui.

What would be a 'reasonable' price for a double room (with travel cot)? my husband wants to stay at a hotel near the airport and the room rate is £180 which sounds a lot to me - is it?

The airport hotels are expensive, both the one at Chek Lap Kok itself and the one on Lantau (think one might be a Regal and the other a Novotel).

I really don't know what sort of deals there are around now but if you are going to spend that sort of money I'd be looking to see whether I could get a room at the Island Shang for that. Maybe even the Peninsula, if you're lucky. The Wharney and the other modest business hotels would be much less than 180 quid.

The Airport Express is spectacularly efficient and you might as well stay in town as out at the airport. You won't get lost, you won't be late, the train is public transport at its very finest.

I agree that there is no need to be at the air port hotels. The air port express is fantastic.
Sorry, can't comment on particular hotels but I'd get onto a price-saving website and see what you can find.
I'm fairly sure that all the 'big' hotels will have shuttles to take you to the air port express so you don't need to worry about getting to and from.

I second the YMCA recommendation.

Stayed there for 3 nights en route to australia with 18 month old child - fab - much cheaper than similar hotels, a living area separate from the bedroom and very central location (near star ferry terminal)

Was recommended to us and we thought it was a mad idea but turned out to be great
