We are tempted by the idea of boating round the Dutch canals - does anyone have any experience/tips?

We had 2 boating holidays, but on the Canal du Midi in the South of France. Advice - get the best boat you can afford, preferably with Bow Thrusters, (makes it easier to park)and pick a trip with not too many locks.

The first trip we did had only 2 locks, so we spent a week travelling a couple of hours, then tying up and going to the beach. The 2nd one had about 30 I think. You think that 3 or 4 a day sounds quite manageable, but they all shut for lunch, and queues built up so you end up sitting round in the middle of nowhere for hours. Though of course we had an industrial sized vat of wine, so it wasn't TOO bad.

They were amongst my favourite holidays ever - especially the first one. I hope to do it again when dd is a little bit bigger and swim/help steer the boat.
