DP is going to Cannes for work Tues through to Thurs. DD and I may join him, but is there much for us 2 to do for 3 days?

Beach?

babyOcho · 05/01/2009 20:26

Is the weather any good in Jan?

Ro be honest I wouldn't bother in Jan unless you are into boats bigtime. The beach is fine but you won't be able to bathe and a lot of the beach restaurants will be closed. You could head due North into the hill villages but you would need a car. Nice is fantastic for you - galleries and shopping and stuff and very close - but less good for DD.

If we did get the car would DD have anything to do? Is it warm at that time of year?

No, not particularly warm in the winter. You will need warm coats and stuff. The surrounding countryside is beautiful though. How old is your DD? If she is of an age to enjoy galleries etc then fine but most of the activities (of which there are many for children from May onwards) are dependent on the sun.

I would hire a car and go inland. No, there's not much for your DD to do, but if she's 10 months she should be quite happy whilst you have a wander, both of mine are more than happy exploring villages. I would have drive to st paul de vence, Biot, Mougins Grasse or Valbonne, they're all within 30 minutes of cannes and are absolutely gorgeous. I wouldn't think that the weather is that great but it may be nice and sunny and lovely for a wander. The shopping in cannes is very nice, although expensive, so that my pass some time too.

I don't know if you will see this (already in Cannes?) but here it goes:

It's raining and very cold at the moment, which is unusual. I remember having lunch on the beach with just a t-shirt in previous years around this time.

When it rains, there is nothing to do - we don't have soft play areas, nor much indoor activities of any kind for babies/children because weather is pretty much always quite pleasant. There are several large shopping centers you can spend a few hours in - Cap 3000 between Nice and Cannes (~20 min drive), or Metropole in Monaco (~45 min drive). I hear it is snowing inland, so driving away from the sea is probably not a good idea these days.

If sun reappears soon, stay in Cannes. There are quite a few cafes/restaurants on the beach (yes, they are open), and I think your 10 month old DD would enjoy playing with the sand. At the west end of the beach where there is Palais des Festivals (where stars walk the red carpet during Cannes Film Festival), there are some kiddie attractions like a merry go round, which might interest your DD.

Sales start tomorrow (Wednesday) so shopping could be interesting as well. Haute Couture is on La Croisette (seaside road) but best shopping imho is on parallel Rue d'Antibes.

Enjoy

Thanks all... I've decided to stay in London, in the cold
