We've (husband and I, mid 50's) have decided to take a break after Christmas, the timing will suit his work schedule but we have no idea where to go. We're travelling from Ireland, preferably Shannon (it is the nicest airport to use, highly recommend it) but obviously will use others if necessary. We've been to Prague, Bruges and Maastricht in the last year, driving from Prague to Ireland twice and stopping a long the way (combined business with a few days away) Previously we visited Krakow and I visited Amsterdam with my son last May, our main holiday was two weeks in Normandy, we brought our car so spent it touring wherever we wanted and booking accommodation as needed. I'm giving this info so people will get an idea of what we like. Our favourite was Krakow, there was just so much to see and do, the history was amazing and the people lovely, next was Amsterdam and I will go ba k with dh but not yet, third was Prague, we visited it in March and July so very different weather but another interesting place. We enjoy walking, using public transport, eating out, seldom drink alcohol, enjoy history, good walking tours are a bonus, like good hotels but once they're clean, quiet and not to far out of the centre of things we're happy. We don't mind the cold but would prefer to avoid rain (we're Irish, get enough of it here), crisp dry cold is nice. Has anyone got suggestions because we're totally lost as to where to even start looking at. We're not into sports so skiing etc is no use to us. It's only recently we can afford holidays thanks to dh going to college in his 50's and having a complete career change, I'm retired due to chronic illness so we've had a few tough decades and now want to start enjoying ourselves so these trips mean a lot.
