Menorca or Lanzarote in September?

We're looking at booking our first holiday abroad next September, just me and dh for a week. Possibly a villa as this is how we usually holiday as a family. We've been looking at Menorca and Lanzarote as we've seen a few nice and reasonably priced villas there and flight prices seem reasonable too. Has anyone been to either and would recommend? Any particular area to go to or avoid in either? Would the weather likely be nice? Pool and sea warm enough to enjoy? How expensive is it to eat/drink out? We don't want to spend too much as we'll still go away for a couple of weeks in August for our usual family holiday. We want a relaxing week enjoying the pool and going exploring the area on some days, lots of sun and good food.

Is that a thing now though....last minute holiday deals? I've heard people saying they don't exist anymore but if they do i'm definitely up for booking last minute for a good deal and also to check the weather forecast at the time. Yes we would definitely go out to restaurants to eat still even if going ai or half board. I understand that, a villa just for a couple is a big expense, thinking more towards a hotel now so not worrying about supermarket shopping and a bit more going on. A lot of villas are further out too, we would have be looking for one close to everything if we went for a villa. So much to decide!

Early September sounds like the safest bet for more stable weather and temperatures. Where about do you like to go to in Menorca?

In September I would choose Menorca. Early September still hot, late September lovely and warm with the odd swift shower.
October to April I would choose Lanzarote. Whereabouts depends what you want.

Lanzarote isn’t ever high on my list although we’ve had several holidays there. Menorca is prettier and the sea will be warmer but it could rain. Lanzarote might be overcast but will likely be dry

I would book late and get the best deal. We always book 4 weeks before we go. I worked in travel for a long time and as long as you don’t have one specific airport or departure day you’ll get a good deal.

We’re going to Menorca in 10 days time. We go most Septembers. Last year the weather was red hot and in the thirties for the whole time we were there. The sea is always warm and calm and is lovely to swim in.

It’s a much nicer island than Lanzarote, tbh.

I’m going to Menorca in 20 days time. I hope the weather will be great. I’ve been 3 times before and love it but always earlier in the year.

I love Menorca. It is a really lovely island. I’ve always rented villas in Binibecca. Easy to reach from the airport. Plenty of restaurants to choose from, lovely beach and very easy to get around and explore the island.

Menorca is a shorter flight so that would make me want to go there rather Lanzorote. Been to both and I prefer Menorca as well.

@Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows we usually stay around Punta Prima, Alcafaur, Binibecca Cala Torret areas tbh most resorts are lovely.

I went to Menorca last September and loved it. Very laid back and easy. It was booked last minute and we stayed in Cala n Bosch which I was told was one of the less desirable resorts but I thought it was fine.

We hired a car and explored all over. Beautiful sandy beaches on the south coast. More rugged on the north. Loved Ciutadella, didn’t make it to Mahon. Will definitely go back.

My favourite place to go is Playas de Fornells - we usually rent a villa or apartment there. It's a really pretty resort, quiet, traditional style, has a small number of restaurants and a couple of bars, and a couple of hotels. There's a lovely beach in walking distance, and it's not far from the fishing village of Fornells, which is lovely in the evening for fish restaurants and a couple more bars. All very low key though.

We like Son Bou as well, a bit more touristy, but still low key, and has a gorgeous beach.

To be honest, you can't really go wrong with most resorts on Menorca, there's not really anything too busy or built up. Possibly the busiest resorts are to the north of Cuitadella at the west end of the island, but it's still quite low key compared to some resorts on mainland Spain, and has the advantage of being near to Cuitadella, which is a beautiful port, for days or evenings out

Thank you all so much for the great advice, Menorca certainly seems to be the preference of most people. I think we'll look there and possibly for a last minute deal as we aren't set on airport or dates. Will have a look at all of the recommended resorts tomorrow, so excited!!

I’ve been to both but prefer lanzarote as it’s interesting. Go and see the volcano, manrique (sp) built his house into a lava air bubble. Lagoons. We usually stay in los mojones in playa del carmen and eat around the harbour. Get the boat to Puerto calero.
