Looking for a few days away over summer in the Peak District, like the look of Buxton and Castleton due to things in the local areas - caves, Peveril
castle, Chee Dale stones etc. Kids are young teen and primary age.

Has anyone been? Any other things to be aware of and would you recommend it for a short family break?

Husband took kiddo in the camper van over Easter time. Basically caves, pub teas and repeat
But that suits them

I am not a fan of Buxton tbh. Though thecaves there are amazing.

Now Castleton is great - more caves (excellent caves!), great walks, good base to go to Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Monsal Trail, Hathersage lido (book!)

Both are close to each other, buxton is a bigger town, nice architecture, but Castleton is beautiful and id prob recommend there, of the two. So much to do in the area.

I live relatively close to both. (so have done Day trips)

Both are nice places and there is plenty to keep you busy in this beautiful part of the world.

I live in Castleton - it's prettier than Buxton (and smaller), it can get very crowded in the summer but there's lots for kids to do if they like caves, walks, playing in the river etc.
