Shenandoah National Park - any recommendations?

Hello - we're off to Washington DC for a week in September for a family wedding and were thinking about heading over to Shenandoah national park for a few days after the wedding. We'll have a 21/2 year old with us. Any one been there? Any recommendations on where to stay, what to do?
All would be gratefully received.

We went to Shenandoah National Park last September and it was amazing.

Hopefully the leaves on the trees will be changing colour when you go as that is an unforgettable sight.

We stayed in the Skyland Lodge which was in the middle of the park and offered amazing views up to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The cabins are simply decorated but very comfortable and you certainly won't starve there. Few of the rooms have TV but we certainly didn't miss it.

There are guided walks and children's nature trails with forest rangers - you might get lucky and see a bear in the distance .

That's great - thanks PurlyQueen: we were thinking about staying at the Skyland Lodge, so is good to know that is comfy and has great views. My DS will be absolutely delighted if we see a bear (not so sure about his mummy though!)
