Hi , we are travelling to Argentina and Brazil this year , we’ve read that it’s advisable to have a yellow fever jab as we will be visiting the Iguazu falls ,my other half is over 60 and we’ve read it’s not advisable due to bad side effects as he’s over 60 , I will be getting in touch with our surgery but has anyone else had this jab ? Would you recommend it ?

I had this jab many years ago when it was required for entry into certain countries. Medical guidance about YF jabs has changed and it's now considered a life long immunization but for some countries you have to prove you have had it done in the past - there's usually a certificate. Older people are exempt, I believe. However, if you've never had it at all I wouldn't be rushing to have it now if it isn't a necessity. I don't recall needing one for Arg/Brazil and we went to Iguassu Falls a few years ago. Fab place btw!

I had it a long time ago, it hurts a lot! Most of Brazil is yellow fever risk looking at the map, talk to a travel clinic, they will give you better advice than we can.

Talk to a vaccination specialist at a travel
clinic re this particular vaccination. They can give you proper advice.

I have had a look at the NHS website on yellow fever vaccine and it is not contra indicated for those over 60.

@AttilaTheMeerkat , it absolutely is contraindicated for those over 60.
@Carmen866 , you can get exemption certificates sometimes from your GP or from travel clinics that state you can’t have the vaccination because of your age. I was talking about this to someone this evening (conversation about cruising). My husband and I have with some sadness accepted that there are places in the world we won’t see, we don’t want the risk of death from the vaccination nor do we want yellow fever.

Yes I had it for Brazil in 2018

I had it about 20 years ago. It didn't hurt and it was all fine - and I'm a massive wimp! I'm sure it's a lot less bad than getting yellow fever so maybe weigh up the pros and cons. Iguacu had mosquitoes when we were there.

Just read about the risk of death! So maybe skip the jab and the falls...!

Difficult decision we are going in June so mosquitoes are fewer but still there . I will speak to a travel clinic Thankyou all
