When to book long haul flights?

Usually I would have our summer holiday booked by now but we had to wait on a few key dates so haven’t yet. We are looking at a long haul destination - Vietnam, Malaysia or Indonesia. Should I book right now or is there a chance flights might come down in price at all? Any experience in this? Chat GBT says 3-6 months before. We’re looking for end of July/August so prime school holiday time. I’m antsy about not having them booked!

It's going to be expensive whatever. I'd just book them. Typically flights are more the closer you get to peak times.

What country appeals to you among 3?

All three, hence the dithering! I have been to Indonesia and Malaysia before.

We booked for August school hols flying to Vietnam with a stop over in Kuala Lumpur. I booked them in sept and paid £3.4k for 3 adults and 14 yr old

We booked KL, Cambodia and Vietnam in January and they’ve gone up since. I suppose it depends how much you want to make sure you get the flights you want? We also booked early for Japan last year and again they went up, not down.

I was price checking flights to Canada between Christmas and New Year. They went up over £300 each in the space of a week, I assume because everyone else was looking and booking.

Unfortunately there was no way we could book before now. Thanks all!

I’d be surprised if they came down at all. We gave up on our long haul plans two years ago because the flights had got so expensive by the time we could commit (about 4 months out). We booked for this summer about a month ago and that was bad enough.
