We are going March/April time, looking for one in SF to see Alcatraz etc and one in Napa Valley.

We like a gym/pool, probably 4 star type.

Any recommendations please?

TIA

We liked Hotel Caza - great location with a nice walk to Fishermans Wharf. It had a lovely, relaxed bar area which seems to be usual in the US. There was an outdoor pool, but I'm not sure about a gym?

Not the Hilton Union Square, it is the worst Hilton I have ever stayed in by a country mile, especially for the price which was about $250. Although a few of the issues were "1st world problems" (stand up row with breakfast staff over whether I should have been able to have an egg or not with breakfast, depending on whether the egg was hot or cold" was particularly petty), I would also argue that no swimming pool available, a mile long queue to check in late at night, no apology, the whole place looking like a building site, no security or lift security (followed to room by druggie) and the main washrooms being used by similar to have a strip wash, graffiti on the toilet walls. Our room gave me the complete shivers. Shook it all off to go out sightseeing in the morning and the first thing we saw was a police tent around a dead person (not the Hilton's fault, but it does say something about where it is located). In fairness to them, they did give me some of my money back, but it was really dreadful ! Sorry this is not a recommendation, it is more of a "non-recommendation", Some bits of SF are lovely, some really are not. x

Id just look at reviews on TA or Booking. Fisherman’s wharf is a tourist area and boring - you could be anywhere! There’s better things to do in my view. Definitely better places to stay!
