Which would you recommend and why?

Hmm, probably Prague because it's somewhere that is lovely all year round and there are cosy indoors things if the weather is bad. The food lends itself to cold weather too. Lisbon is much more of an outdoor city to me and I don't think you can guarantee that in January.

I was in Lisbon late January a few years ago and it was clear and sunny. Not warm but light jacket weather rather than winter coat. I loved it because it was a lot quieter than the summer and we got to see all the sights (Sintra, etc) in relative peace and quiet. We might have been lucky though.

Prague will be cold (I think) but you can prepare for that. It's probably more lovely in itself than Lisbon.

I went to Prague last January and it was gorgeous. We had a dusting of snow but it added to the atmosphere. The markets were still on (early Jan) and it felt very romantic. Lots of cosy cafes for hot chocolate etc. But I'm a winter person so I like all that. I imagine Lisbon will also be lovely but have a more "spring" feel.

Prague may have snow and Lisbon won’t so that could be a factor? Think Prague may be prettier if Christmas stuff is still up.

They’re both fantastic but would recommend Prague for January as they’re really prepared for colder weather. Most of the bars and restaurants have outdoor heating and big cosy throws and blankets for sitting outside. The vintage open air car tours are lovely with a big blanket in the back seat.

We were in Lisbon this January. We had one sunny day out of three. The rest of the time it rained. We weren’t taken with the city at all tbh. The best Jan city break we ever did was Seville. A much nicer city IMO and lovely warm sunny daytime weather.
