Hurghada holiday - pyramids?

We have a week all inclusive in April booked (Wednesday - Wednesday).
Going with 2 x DC age 9 and 7 who have done Ancient Egypt at school and are really interested.
The plan was to do a day trip excursion to the pyramids, but I’m now wondering if it will be worth going all that way for a day?
I looked at booking a night in Cairo and flying back from there instead but that would add £1k to the holiday.
Any experiences? Would love opinions from people who have done it. Drive or fly? Is it worth it?

Luxor is way more impressive. We did the valley of the kings, the early morning ballon ride, Karnak temple and luxor temple. The pyramids by contrast were a bit of a disappointment!

The pyramids themselves are amazing. But the whole experience surrounding them isn't. Big queues for tickets, hassle for camel rides and souvenirs and thousands upon thousands of tourists. If you're expecting to stand there and marvel at them you'll be disappointed.
Saqqara is a bit more chilled, the pyramids are smaller, but still impressive.
I'd fly, internal flights should be very cheap. Then use booking.com and get a budget hotel in either Giza or near the airport.

The whole pyramid experience has been cleaned up a lot with far less hassle, though there are options to go round in a camel. Oys all enclosed in a heritage park fenced area now. You just have to be firm but your guide will sort that out anyway. I didnt find it crowded at all. On balance, I'm glad I've been to both areas but the Pyramids are literally a Wonder of the World

I didn’t find it crowded either.
