Winter sun recommendations

Hi. DH and I are now empty nesters and I’m looking to book a week/10days for some winter sun in January/early February now that we’re not constrained by school holidays. Budget will be tops £3.5-4K but ideally less. Keen to avoid Brits abroad - no flag wavers or anyone on a mission to be pissed on the all-inclusive bar by midday 😬.
We’ve done Antigua, India, Seychelles, Indonesia so ruling them out. Any suggestions, please?
Thank you!

We did a Nile cruise in January, great weather, not too hot. Lots to see and do. No flag waving at all and very few Brits. We stopped off in Cairo on the way back, which I loved.

Or is that not the kind of thing you are thinking?

A week in Miami was unexpectedly brilliant, staying on South Beach in one of the Art Deco hotels. Again, good weather and lots to do.

Kerala is beautiful.
As is the southern end of Goa.
Thailand, not Phuket. Lots of lovely islands to choose from. Koh Lanta or Koh Chang are 2 of my favorites.

Ooh Thailand sounds good. I love Kerala and Goa, but have been fortunate to have visited both.
Ditto Miami - loved it there, especially the buildings. Never been to Egypt though, that’s a good suggestion. Thank you.

South Africa? Very little jet lag as there’s only a 2 hour time difference. Fantastic scenery, gorgeous beaches and safari’s. Not sure your budget would stretch but worth looking into. Otherwise Cape Verde, Canaries, Egypt, Jordan all warm in our winter. You could also get a package holiday to the Caribbean for your budget.

You might be able to get the south coast of Barbados for that price. Madeira is lovely, but won’t be as warm.

These are great suggestions thank you all! Right, an evening of research awaits 😊

Oman, Abu Dhabi, Thailand, Maldives, Mauritius

You cannot possibly have “done” India! We are off to Darjeeling soon. Have you been there? Or what about seeking out tigers? You might just manage South Africa on your budget if you don’t go too expensive on hotels. Guest houses are better anyway! It’s a relatively inexpensive country when you get there. Or try Morocco or a Nile cruise.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 29/09/2025 19:50

I mean, no, we’ve not “done” India to that extent 😅. I just mean there are so many countries to visit that, on this occasion, I’d probably not want to return to one I’ve already been to.

Mexico is nice at that time of year, we did a week long tour of Mayan ruins followed by a week in a resort for around £4k earlier this year.

Barbados
Thailand
Singapore

We haven't been but friends went to Vietnam and loved it at that time.

Mexico

South Africa? Tunisia is a good idea. It is still cold, but if you go to the south (jerba etc) or the desert (tozer) it is very nice almost all year round.

We like Oman but it’s expensive, especially alcohol. The Gambia is in the same time zone as UK, lovely weather and relatively good value but there is a lot of poverty outside the hotels.
