Is vichy not far enough south ? Don't have a recommendation of accomodation but Vichy is a lovely town. Not that much to see but nice for bimbling (although presumably you only really want somewhere to lay your heads ?)

Vichy not bad but would prefer to get further

somewhere to sleep
and eat and maybe swim

have you looked at sawdays ?

We have stayed in Najac, at L'Oustal del Barry. Was really lovely, but was before ds so some time ago. Also may be too far out of your way?
