German Town mini break

Can anyone recommend a cute German town for a mini break with decent pubs for beer and a historic vibe

I’m sure there is a gorgeous medieval university town

Im Thinking York in Germany.

For a January cold weather trip and within in an hour of an airport. We are a middle aged couple so not after a boozy stag do type vibe but just love decent beer and sitting in good interesting pubs.

Is it direct if you go via Schipol? 🤔🤔

We decided on Nuremberg!! The Nazi history will be fascinating and we can fly direct from our local airport via schipol in a couple of hours.

@CountryQueen

I spent a day in Rudesheim a many years ago in a Rhine cruise. Loved it! Exactly the vibe.

Good choice. I was there this summer.
It's lovely walking around the old town walls.
The Nuremburg Trials Memorium museum is interesting. I didn't make it out to the Nazi rally grounds, but that's supposed to be interesting too.
Pretty much everything is walkable or you can hop on the U-bahn if necessary.

😂

peri- brain fog!

i suppose I mean Nuremberg has its own airport and I can go via schipol which is so much easier than via London for us!

Bamberg.

Small, beautiful and historic - the whole city is a World Heritage Site.

Has the best pubs and the best beer in the whole of Germany by a country mile.

About an hour from Nuremburg airport by train.

Doesn't have the interesting Nazi history that Nuremburg has, but is much more suited to the requirements you laid out in your OP.

No, but as a hub airport it's well set up for transfers and is on the way from the UK, so isn't that long a journey. Plus there's loads of shops, bars and restaurants if you have time for them. Indirect flights can often be surprisingly good value and often cheaper than the first leg to the hub, ie I bet if the OP wanted to just go to Amsterdam on (presumably) KLM it would be more than her flight to Nuremberg.

I'd like to visit Germany more so might be googling a few of these places. There's at least one museum dedicated to Roentgen, who invented the X-ray machine, which is of interest to me, so I could add a few more places of interest.

I wasn’t asking a serious question 🤣😅

And my direct £16.99 flight to Nuremberg 2 years ago wasn’t going to be surprisingly cheaper by having to schlep through Schiphol (no it’s expensive eateries are not enjoyable!)

The OP said she needed to go via Schipol to avoid having to go to London, if you're not near a London airport you don't have the luxury of direct flights at any price to a lot of places.

Exactly. When I lived in the UK it was the same for me. The easiest and cheapest way was to fly via Schipol. It was much less hassle than travelling by train or bus to Manchester or London and getting a direct flight to the destination. And the costs of the train or bus in the UK add up if you have to travel a fair distance.

The Nazi rally grounds are a quick train or tram ride from the main station. Definitely worth seeing for the terrifying size and scale of it.

I’m not near a London airport 😅

The flight isn’t direct, I was simply lightheartedly commenting on that.

FWIW, Ryanair flew Manchester to Nuremberg direct until a couple of years ago. It’s also a quick 1 hour train from Munich

cinnamonbunlover · 22/09/2025 20:51

I knew what you meant @CountryQueen!

Our Local airport is a bit of a backwater but any decent hub is 2 hours drive ans squally involves a hotel the night before ans we’d rather drive 10 mins to the local one and hop to AMS. We have lounge access everywhere too so can get food /drink . We could also go to Munich from AMS to give more options!

Manchester is our nearest and it’s two hours away. It’s never a quick hop

its no more expensive and a lot easier!
