First Solo Travel Ideas?

I’m going to be taking my first trip on my own. I have 2-3 weeks. Budget is flexible but certainly not enough to book a expensive organised tour.

I have recently been to Malaysia, Thailand, Ecuador, and South Africa. Loved SA but found Thailand a bit too touristy.

That’s enough time to come over here to Perth, potter for a bit and hire a car for a bit.

What time of year are you looking at?

Rocknrollstar · 16/09/2025 10:00

Vietnam and Cambodia or join a tour of India

StewkeyBlue · 16/09/2025 10:10

Vietnam.

The homestay guest houses are v affordable, good trains and internal flights, you could do the length of the country, Hà Nội, Central Vietnam (Hue / Da Nang / Hoi An) and HCMC. BUT check the weather for each region for different times of year.

Kerala and Goa

Why did you love South Africa, what did you do there?
Same on others, really, how do you pass your time when on holiday?

sashh · 16/09/2025 11:10

Argentina? Either on its own or with another South American country.

lemonraspberry · 16/09/2025 11:21

How about the balkans and Eastern Europe e.g.take a train down from Lithuania & explore the lesser known countries e.g. Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bosnia etc.

Slimagain · 16/09/2025 16:18

Argentina ! Patagonia especially is fab ! I know Thailand well. Lived there , speak the language.. so have an idea that you need something less on the beaten track but still easy to negotiate.

Bali

Have you been? It's like Benidorm for Aussies.

Bjorkdidit · 17/09/2025 07:54

I think it's more accurate to say it's like Spain for Aussies. Some of Bali is like Benidorm, there are other places that are nice, authentic and not rowdy party places at all.

However, to advise the OP, we need more information about the time of year she's going, what type of weather she wants, whether she's interested in nature, history, museums, watersports etc.

With 2 to 3 weeks, I'd suggest a round island tour of Iceland, just to remind people you don't need to go to the other side of the world for an interesting, worthy experience.

You could do it as a cruise, self drive or probably public transport for some of it. But that would be for say, May to September next year, otherwise it will probably be very cold/dark a lot of the time.

Solo travelling in SA is an experience for sure! And since it's your first time in general solo travelling, I would suggest you ask as many ppl as possible on how to organise yourself, what to take into consideration etc. When are you planning on going? That will absolutely influence the where as well. also have you been to Indonesia? It's largely known for solo travelling too, at least for Europeans. The Gilis are a nice idea and the islands there. Changing islands each few days to see the maximum is what i did, and you will also most definitely meet new ppl (that was my experience at least). But again depends on the period you're going. If you are going soon (like autumn-winter months) why not give it a go to Canary Islands too? I at least am planning on going there, again as a solo traveler (I got the inspo from https://www.getyourguide.com/explorer/tenerife-ttd350/things-to-do-alone-in-tenerife/ and https://www.ferryhopper.com/en/blog/featured/best-islands-spain-solo-travelers). Glad if i helped ^^

Sir Lanka perhaps?

I just returned from a solo trip to Egypt and that was fantastic.

America with a cruise for part of it.
