Holidaying with an 18month old - sleep options

We are going away on Holiday in a month to Spain. We booked a two-bed Airbnb as my little one is a light sleeper and we want to have the right space for him.. this was after a failed resort holiday in one room last year.

The issue we have is he is a tall boy, and travel cots just don't seem to cut it anymore... he touches the sides and this wakes him up. We just had a horrific two-night stay in the UK with a travel cot! I'm looking for hacks or solutions to help make the space safe for him to sleep, and to sleep well.

He will have his room, with a double bed, and a travel cot (made available by the host). He doesn't co-sleep well.. but may be ok to sleep next to me.

Help!!

Can you get a bed guard? Or move the mattress onto the floor?

Why can’t he just sleep in the bed?

Btowngirl · 19/08/2025 09:18

I’d put the mattress on the floor. We usually put her mattress on the floor in our room so once she is awake we have eyes on her right away so she isn’t up to any mischief!

Unfortunately, he is a massive wriggler, and moves around his bed a lot in the night.,. he would fall off. I could look at a bed gaurd, I would just need to get it to Spain.

A bed guard is something I have thought about, but it is just getting it there - any recommendations on ones to travel with are welcome.

We have this which folds a bit smaller but you’d still need a decent sized suitcase to put it in. I’ve also seen you can get inflatable bed bumpers which might work for you?

Mattress on the floor, as PP said.

Bitzee · 19/08/2025 11:05

If you push the bed up against the wall on one side and then use a pool noodle (any big supermarket in Spain will have) or at worst a rolled up large towel under the sheet on the other side it’ll function as a makeshift bed guard. Then just in case, but never needed them, chuck a load of cushions/spare pillows on the floor next to the bed.

We’ve recently gone away with same age dc just slept with me in the double bed. Put dc on the wall side

welshweasel · 19/08/2025 12:37

I did exactly what @Bitzeesuggest. Rolled up towels work fine. Pillow on the floor in case but they never fell out.

Pool noodle under fitted sheet will work as a bumper!
