My DS12 and I are off to Croatia next week. We’re staying in Rovinj. Has anyone got any ideas for a few days out or half days out? I’ve heard the national parks are lovely but can’t find decide which would be best from Rovinj.
Thanks!

@ADHDChick thank you so much! Is all this easy to sort once there? Only asking as I’m on my own with son and I like to pre plan a little.

We were there for a long weekend at the start of the month. There’s no shortage of boat trips and yes, you can book on the day- the companies line up their stalls along the marina. There are a lot of trips to the Lim fjord. There’s an hourly boat to Katarina Island which has a hotel on it, but you can wander around the island- lots of rocky coves where you can swim (bring swim shoes) and lots of little fish.

Going up the stairs of the church tower is fun if you don’t mind very rickety stairs!

If you walk past the big hotels along the coast there’s a big country park and again, lots of covers for swimming. There’s a few beach bars or you could bring a picnic lunch.

We did a sunset dolphin cruise. I wouldn’t recommend it- we’d booked a speedboat tour where they try to find the dolphins away from the main boats but I didn’t realise just how many boats would be out there looking for dolphins and just how close some companies would get to them- one larger boat in particular was practically on top of the dolphins. I wouldn’t do it again, have done much better boat tours elsewhere.

We stayed in Rovinj with a 6 year old and a 13 year old and we loved our trip to Brijun islands. You can hire a golf buggy (bring your driving license!) and travel round the island. There is a zoo, Roman ruins, dinosaur prints and beaches. It was fantastic. The port is about 30 mins south of Rovinj.

Also a really good waterpark called istralandia. About 45 mins north of Rovinj

We went to Venice for one of our days in Rovinj. Very easy to get to by train.
I don’t recommend pula bar grr amphitheater which is impressive.

@Verite1 this sounds fab! Could you please give me a little more info on how to do this? Thank you.

This is the website. We did the self guided tour to Veliki

You need to travel to Fazana (about 40 mins from Rovinj) and then get a boat from there.

@Littlesticklebrick please may you tell me where you stayed? I'd like to book something for next summer

Littlesticklebrick · 02/09/2025 07:13

@MakeTeaNotWar we had a fabulous time!! Rovinj is beautiful. We stayed at the Island Hotel Istra. The hotel is on its own little island- Red Island. We had to take a 15 min ferry from Rovinj to our hotel. It really is wonderful!

@Littlesticklebrickah I’m glad to hear that! Did you have a car? A lot of the accommodation looks quite pricey Blush do you think staying a few nights in the Old Town is a good shout with 2 young teens? Let me know if you came across any great eateries

which route did you take for the train to Venice? Thinking of flying to Venice then taking train to Rovinj but can’t find any reasonable train routes online! Many thanks!
