Hotel in San Francisco?

my friend is looking for a hotel in San Fran just for one night, 27th March. It's for her, her dh and son who is 13. They'd like somewhere central, like union square, not too expensive but not a hovel! anyone been and have any reccommendations?

i'v e been and stayed at the holiday inn in china town, by the pointy tower thing. very nice and very central, don't know how much it was though.
sf is a fantastic city , i'm very jealous!!

Stayed in a brilliant place a few years ago, the Red Victorian B&B in Haight St, dont know if its still on the go.. Great area.

Can recommend two on/near Union Square.

Handlery Inn Union Square is nice and is situated just off Union Sqaure, also Westin St Francis on Union Square itself is very good.
