We will be going on holiday in August and would love somewhere childfriendly preferably with some kids clubs for the 4 year old, but that will not be blistering hot. Am open to suggestions but considering somewhere in the mountains in france/austria/italy. Anyone been? Any other suggestions?

Denmark or Holland?

Haven / Butlins (UK)

The Auvergne in France is nice, but have never been with children. Not sure if there are any mountain resorts offering kids' clubs facilities there either. But it is so beautiful and reasonably cool up there in high summer.

We often go to the mountains in the summer for long weekends - Sun Esprit do kids clubs etc here . We got a really good deal to Chamonix with them through Iglu.com when ds was 5 and dd 22 months. If you fancy Switzerland (not that I'm biased !) August 1st is National day and some resorts have fireworks, parades and small local fairs. Most hotels will have under 6's free in your room , and meals payable locally, but you chance childcare - there is a list of Swiss Family Friendly hotels, some of which would do childcare in house, I could post a link to if you were interested.

Otherwise we have found the Italian Lakes great for families.

Annecy in France, near the alps/border, is beautiful, voted prettiest town in France
Have a look on tripadvisor.com for reviews

Have a look here but bear in mind that the hotels subscribe to this list so they are not standardised in terms of food, rooms, childcare etc. Even where childcare is offered it may not be English speaking but just enough to get by. Of these we have stayed in the Alphubel in Saas Fee (you'd need to check the min age for participation in summer activities), the Edelweiss in Engelberg, but both in Winter only, and the Lago di Lugano in Summer. You'd probably need to go to one of the larger resorts to get the most entertainment and activity. These are the resorts featured by Swiss Travel holiday brochure, for example, just to give you some idea as to which are more active (although even a few mentioned are pretty small!).
