Ryanair 10kg checked in baggage

Hello,

Does anyone know how strict Ryanair are with the size of 10kg bags checked into the hold?

The website is confusing as under “bag policies” it says it’s the same size requirements as a 20kg bag, but when you go to add a 10kg checked bag it says 55x40x20.

We’re flying from Bristol if that makes any difference?

Ryanair are strict with everything, hence we won’t fly with them unless there is no other choice!

They get money in any way they can. If you’re a tiny bit over the limit, they’ll charge you.

My friend got charged extra after the staff tried and failed to cram a very expensive designer “carry on case” into the stupid holder and scratched it because it wouldn’t fit. It was dear at £70 or something. Check the measurements carefully as they seem to vary from airline to airline and if it won’t fit…

If its going in the hold then all they care about is the weight. Make sure its under 10kg

If it's a checked in bag all they care about is the weight, as long as it’s under 10.9kg you’ll be fine. Anything above that and you’ll either have to take stuff out or pay extra. If it’s a 10kg cabin bag then you’ll have to check the size carefully.

I often fly with 10kg checked allowance out and 20kg allowance back. Same suitcase which is a fair bit larger than the cabin size 55x40x20. They have never checked the size. Only weighed it.

Thanks everyone. I spoke with someone on the online chat who said it had to be as small as a 10kg checked bag. Bet they’ll just weigh it, but don’t want to risk it!

The size you quote is a standard carry on bag for many airlines and carry on usually has a limit of 10kg. So Ryanair charge you hold prices that scheduled airlines would just allow as carry on. It’s quite hard to get 10kg in the bag size you quote.

A 10kg cabin case and under seat bag can go in the cabin with priority. Save you checking in hold luggage

they are super strict with the size when you bring it on board as priority in the cabin. they don't check the size of the luggage only the weight when you are checking in yoir luggage before you board plane.

That's not right. If it's in the hold, the size doesn't matter. Many airports are going to the bag drop stage being completely done by the passenger anyway with no contact with Ryanair staff at all. If it's going in the cabin, they do still check the size.

They charge less to put a 10 Kg bag in the hold and you then don't need to drag it round the airport and fight for locker space. You're also not limited on liquids volumes so can be a worthwhile option.

The website isn’t confusing at all. Couldn’t be clearer. There is no size requirement for a hold bag, only weight.

This is the confusing bit… if you then go to actually add it to your booking it then quotes a max size.

I double checked with the person on chat (human not robot) and asked specifically if checked 10kg bag size is the same as a cabin10kg bag size and he confirmed it was.

It definitely is NOT clear on the website (unless as you say, when you’re selecting your bag allowance when booking, which wasn’t helpful for me as I wasn’t the person booking).

It ONLY lists the dimensions for the 20 kg check in bag and not the 10 kg check in bag (and knowing ryanair I knew that the 10 kg size allowance would not be the same as the 20 kg size allowance!)

I wasted 20 minutes of my life trying to speak to a Ryanair bot this morning who kept directing me to their FAQs despite their FAQs not answering my question.

Hence a quick search on mumsnet and bingo!

I flew with them recently. They only weighed it. Didn’t measure it. I wasn’t over , but a man near me got charged for being 2kg over.

It doesn't help that there are two pages on the Ryanair website that contradict each other.

One shows that the size limit for a 10 kg checked bag, is the same as for a 20 kg bag. The other, linked by the OP, says that the size limit for a 10 kg checked bag is the same as carry on.

I sometimes choose the 10 kg checked bag because it means I can take whatever liquids I like, don't to unpack my stuff to go through security or drag it around the airport and onto the plane and don't have to fight for overhead locker space for the minor inconvenience of waiting to collect it afterwards. It's usually slightly cheaper too.

But if my bag was bigger than the carry on limits, I would save the other page that says the size allowed is bigger and use that to argue my case if they decided my bag was too big. Luckily it's not happened to me yet.

I did this recently and they don't even see the size as it's a self check in. They literally just check the weight. They also seem to add it all together so I had 2 x 20kg and 1 x 10kg and it weighed each bag off 50kg so I wondered if I could have had 20, 15, 15 - difficult to tell. We were hugely under anyway. I did research thoroughly and was going to take a larger bath for the 10kg but didn't require it in the end, so I can't say I've actually done it but I think the 10kg bag size is just for hand luggage as it needs to fit in the overhead locker.

So at Bristol airport it was just a weighing machine so nobody checking for sizes. Coming back was a small airport, but the lady just gave the bag a weigh and cursory glance.. we did comply with the dimensions, so it may be that if our bag was bigger she’d have caused a fuss. Who knows!

I think if it's going in the hold they don't give one. They are just manic about hand luggage.
