I have 8 months left on my passport on the day I leave Canada (visiting the US from Canada) is that enough?

Well that rather depends how long you are there for

Both Canada and the US only require your passport to be valid for the intended duration of your stay. You do not need one, three, six, twelve, or any other number of months on top of that. Nor does the passport have to be less than ten years old on entry (that's the EU). The only criterion is that the expiry date is after the date of your return ticket (or other return date, if you can convince the border officers, but a return ticket will usually work best).
