Montreal in December

Looking for an Canadian alternative to New York for a short break in mid December.

Has anyone been to Montreal at this time of year - if so:

  1. Is there plenty to do / see ?
  2. Is it too cold ?
  3. Is it Christmasy at all ?

Note: We visited Toronto in the summer of 2023, so don't really want to go back there so soon

Brrr! 😂

I went one February and it was very very cold. Everyone was underground rather than at street level. I can’t imagine it being particularly Christmassy if that’s what you’re hoping for. Quebec City on the other hand is delightful and had a lovely snowy atmosphere. We got the train up from Montreal.

It will be really cold. It always feels grey and depressing in winter (imo). As previously mentioned everything is underground. There are Christmassy parts, but it’s not going to challenge NYC. Toronto or Vancouver are more festive.

I’d say Quebec City or Banff. Although it will be cold in the mountains, the humidity is very low. Layers are key. Once you are inside you will warm up very quickly.

If you look it up, you will see that Montréal is actually a bit warmer than Québec City. It's 150 miles southwest.
Yes, Montréal has a lot of Christmas atmosphere and activities, but you do have to tolerate the bitterly cold weather and there can be flight cancellations or delays due to heavy storms.
