Is Croatia (Split) too hot in August with kids?

We've found a lovely coastal villa with a pool near Split, Croatia. We would like to go in August (first two weeks) but are worried about the heat being too much. DC are 8, 11 and 13.
Our plan was to explore locally along the coast in week 1, making the most of the pool and then hire a car and explore further inland during week 2.
Is it unbearably hot? Would love to hear from people who have been with kids please. They coped okay with 30 degree heat in Germany last year (non coastal area) & we're always really sensible with sun cream, staying hydrated, in the shade, etc but still can't help that niggling feeling that it's the wrong time of year to go there / the wrong part of Europe to go during August.
Thanks!

I’m in Brac at the moment. It’s a one hour ferry ride from split port. Currently 34 degrees and kids seem to be coping fine. I think it’s unusual temp for this time of year. Split is very busy and hot right now but the ferries to other islands are a big bonus. It’s worth investigating

I had a day in Split august last year (cruise) and it was cooler than Italy. I burn easily and was okay even white water rafting.

Thank you, that's helpful & reassuring

We were on the coast and in Dubrovnik a few years ago when they were 10&12. It was great. Dubrovnik was a bit busy and sweaty but you’re not going to be precisely there. We did visits early and late when the cruise ships had gone. We all loved it.

We’re here at the moment. It’s absolutely scorching (and we’re just back from Thailand!). We used to live somewhere hot so are used to the heat and being sensible- but this is exhausting- can’t imagine it with kids…… but I am old…..

Thanks all, a lot to think about!

Do you tan?

We are Irish and almost fried to death in Montenegro that time of year 😅 and that was with a nice costal breeze

Dubrovnik when we went was worse somehow more sweaty????

We found Dubrovnik almost unbearably hot in June a few years ago, but you'll likely be spending a lot of time in the pool if you have one. Personally we've resolved to avoid southern Europe in Jul/Aug now - the May temps there suit us much better, or northern Europe during the summer.

We’ve been to Croatia May half term twice. Gorgeous. When we did a day trip to Dubrovnik we fried. I would never go height of August. There are so many beautiful sights you’d just be too hot to do. Also the crowds in the old town were bad - I remember saying ‘dread to think what it’s like in summer holidays’. Can you book this villa early for next May half term? That’s my advice!

We did Split and Dubrovnik in August with four children aged about 7-13. It was very hot, and that was exacerbated by the stone buildings and pavements, but that was all part of the fun. Dubrovnik has lots of water fountains; when we got too hot we just filled our hats from them, then put them on and soaked ourselves.

We were in Split and Brac Island in August 2023 with our (then) 7 year old. It was around 35C and very humid. We wouldn't do it again because we like to be active in the daytime and do some exploring and it was way too hot for that. We day tripped to Krka Krka National Park which was beautiful but we were dripping in sweat (sorry!). We ended up doing lots of swimming both on the beaches (sea is spectacular in Croatia) and in the pool of our small apartment block and nothing else in the day. Evenings were lovely to walk around and things came alive, like an evening market in Supetar. So I'd say fine if you just want to relax and swim but too hot to explore and be active in the day.

Thanks everyone, it's been really helpful to hear all of your experiences.

Think it's safe to say it's back to the drawing board for us!

Yes I am with you . I thought I was going to die in Turkey last July . Never again - too hot to eat let alone see/ do anything .

We went last week of August last year to both Dubrovnik and Split. Dubrovnik was unbearable but Split (Omis) was noticeably cooler with a lovely breeze.

I had a few days in Split in August with 2DCs at the end of a holiday elsewhere in Croatia a couple of years ago. It was hot but we did things early morning and evening and spent middle of the day and afternoon by pool/in air con/by one of the "beaches" with forest. It was busy and hot but manageable at those times.

It's an amazing city and I really want to go back and explore more of the islands.

It’s fine OP took DD there in August before and she coped fine.
