Skiathos and Skopelos

Going for 11 nights in August, 2 adults and 2 teens. We like beaches, food, exploring. How many nights shall we stay on each? Do we need a car? We normally rent one so we can explore. We like to be independent so doing airbnb

Watching this thread with interest! I really want to go to the Pelion and take the ferry across to Skopelos next year. I hope someone has the info you need OP.

Oooh we did this a few years ago and we also went to Alonissos. We did a long trip:
5 nights skiathos - no car, travelled about by bus a few days.
10 nights skopelos - hire car - drove everyday (did all the Mamia Mia locations 😉). Skopelos is a big island and a car was definitely essential for exploring
4 nights Alonnisos - no car, used taxis and buses

It was one of our favourite holidays.

Depending on where you are staying in Skiathos, there are boat buses which travel between beaches and Skiathos town. If you miss the last bus back you can take a Taxi from the taxi rank in Skiathos Town.
Day boat hire is a great way to see the beautiful coves and beaches. You can drop anchor and swim ashore with a dry bag ( usually provided by the boat hire company) and visit little tavernas on secluded beaches.
Skiathos town is fantastic early evening and at night. Definitely book ahead if you want to be next to the water side in restaurants.
There are loads of cool bars with bean bags on the steps in Skiathos town.
we used Trip advisor and followed the tourist info on instagram to get an idea of what was going on for us and the teenagers.
Skopelos is quieter and more relaxing, both places are lovely. I’m sure you will have an incredible time. There was a lovely documentary series with a crafty lady who renovated a place in Skiathos town, I think it was a BBC one, which is worth a watch.

How do we get to Alonissos? From Skopelos? Or are there ferries from Skiathos?

We did 1 night Skiathos (my least favourite but we had an 11 and 8 year old so it may well be more interesting for teens)
5 night Alonissos (amazing and beautiful)
5 nights Skopelos (also fabulous)

Both we and the kids loved it all, Alonissos for me was the highlight but we love remote, less touristy Greece. Had a car on both islands (not on Skiathos) - just used taxis there.

Alonissos is easy to get to from both Skiathos and Skopelos, the ferries start in Skiathos, then go onto Skopelos and Alonissos and back again. There are a few different ferries and a hydrofoil doing the route.

I did all 3 a few years ago and loved Alonissos so much that the first day I got there I cancelled my last night before flying back in Skiathos and booked an extra night on Alonissos.

Skiathos has amazing beaches and Skiathos town is nice for an explore, but personally I prefer Skopelos and Alonissos.

Thank you. We decided on 5 days in Skiathos and 5 in Skopelos. Wish we have another 5 days for Alonissos, may do a day trip.

Enjoy! Alonissos is also quite doable as a day trip from Skopelos, which would give you a bit of a taster.

Personally, assuming you are on a Skiathos flight, l would allow at least one or two nights on Skiathos at the end of your trip.

The Greek Meltelmi winds can suddenly blow up in August leading to ferry cancellations.

So, you can fly and catch the Skopelos ferry on your arrival day, even better.

We did this 40 years ago. A week on Skiathos and a week in Skopolos. I expect it's changed!
I remember we used taxis on Skopolos, very very cheap, huge mercedes.
Travelled between islands on a hydrofoil.
