There's not a huge amount to do there but it depends upon which island you stay.

I'm not keen and wouldn't go back.

Have you thought about Madeira?

I wouldnt do cape verde with a 9 year old personally
Not a huge amount to do for a child and not very child friendly in my opinion

Hoppinggreen · 24/05/2025 19:53

It tends to be a bit marmite but we had a great time
The DC were 16 and 12 though. We were only there a week and did chill a lot but also sound things to do, not sure about younger kids.
We stayed at the Melia Tortuga, the rooms are great and are 2 bedroom suites
Take a shed load of snacks though, everything is expensive and not easy to get

Ummm sounds like a rethink then - want warm, not mega expensive & some times when 9 year old can join activities if they want…

its quite chavy and windy af, not much to do
Wouldn’t go back . Would second Madeira for child that age or Cyprus

I think it depends where you stay, there was a kids pool, club and activities and a water park when we went but I agree it was like a slightly more upmarket Benidorm people wise and windy. Was ok during the day as it made it a bit cooler but in the evenings it was cold (for me). There is almost NOTHING to do outside of the hotel resorts either.

We are in the same predicament as you but looking for Oct half term, ask me a couple of months ago and I’d have said we wouldn’t go back to CV but it’s looking ever more likely 🙄 although will have a look at Madeira thanks to this thread!

Do not be put off by "all the anti-tourism stuff in the Canary Islands". It's a typical "man bites dog" story for the crappy clickbait media, but there is absolutely no likelihood of your holiday being one iota affected by it.

It's like if an American cancelled their holiday to the UK because 300 Tommy Robinson supporters got a bit leery at a demo in Trafalgar Square, or to France because there was a small riot in Paris (which is known locally as "Saturday").
