Mauritius- freaking out re parasite outbreak

So I am booked to go to Mauritius in July (first time on a long haul flight so feels like a big deal anyway!) and have just been looking at the most recent reviews of our hotel many of which detail guests coming down with gastroenteritis caused by a parasite called cryptosporidiosis (there were no reviews re illness when we booked a few months ago). I'll call Thomas Cook on Monday to discuss but this would be very good grounds to change hotel if possible?! I know illness is a possible risk when travelling but I am reading stories of people being hospitalised and I am terrified of putting my children at risk. 😭

I am prone to catastrophising hence why I'm asking what other people would do. Thank you.

Stay out of the pool, OP!

But I'm not going to travel all that way to stay out the pool? 🥲

How many reviews? When did they start being posted?

Agree that not using the pool is a bleak option!

Just throughout may. It's the first time I've checked the reviews for weeks and I only went on to see if there is a laundrette on site. The hotel is Friday Attitude and it's trip advisor I'm looking at. I'd rather cancel and go to Spain or Portugal instead rather than go all the way there and feel on edge the whole time. It seems like an issue with the water supply.

I forgot to say how many reviews. I haven't counted but it's multiple.

I’ve just had a quick look at the reviews of that hotel. Honestly, if it were my holiday, if I could rebook somewhere else, I probably would. What a shame for you. I don’t think I could relax going there with my kids.

Surely you and your families health is more important?

CharityShopMensGlasses · 24/05/2025 12:54

It's a really awful bug and a bad health risk for the kids. Definitely move your hotel/ trip

Of course. I just meant i would rather cancel completely. I don't think staying out of the pool would solve the problem unfortunately.

It's a very nasty thing, there was a break out at a UK petting zoo within the last month or so and people were hospitalised, including kids. You don't want that.

Koazy · 24/05/2025 15:14

It’s unlikely they’ll let you change within ten weeks free of charge but they might let you amend for a fee depending on airline etc. Did you mean Thomas Cook? They’re not the most helpful since they’re online only these days.

littleteapot86 · 24/05/2025 15:21

Thanks for the replies. Can't say I'm too hopeful about any of it.
