Holiday with pre-schoolers, not typical beach break

Before children we loved travelling and exploring, favourite places so far being Sri Lanka and Costa Rica, but since we had them (kids currently 4 and 2 with another on the way) all we’ve really done are beach breaks, which we love as well, but it would be nice to have a change too.

We did a safari with them about 18 months ago, which catered toward children as well and was amazing; they loved it and so did we. Have also done a Disney cruise, which they and we loved, but it was quite full on too! So, what really successful holidays have you had with young kids, that’s not your typical beach break please? Short or long haul fine.

Hong Kong worked really well with kids. We did a day at Disneyland, a day at Ocean Park, saw giant pandas, did a day trip to see pink river dolphins, and so many kid-friendly museums. They loved the food too!

we also did Hong Kong. Shanghai was also good if somewhat hard work.

florida and New York also successful - lots to do in New York. We did Disneyland in florida but also the Kennedy space centre and an alligator place that the kids loved.

Caribbean sailing as well. We did bareboat hire so if you do that you’d need one of you to be qualified skipper but you can get skippered yachts.

Egypt also good Luxor has snorkelling, diving and trips to valley of the kings and temples.

All great ideas, thank you. Hadn’t thought of Hong Kong as a family. Been once with work, but that could be a great option. Tokyo as well maybe, with a Disney daytrip.

Florida we possibly have earmarked with family for 2027 anyway.

I took my then 1 year old to Easter Island in the Pacific between Chile and NZ. It was a fab holiday, very chilled vibe, temperatures around 20 degrees, could just potter around the moai, slower paced than an adult only trip but perfect. At the time we lived in Australia and it was easier to get to than from the UK. Also had a lovely trip to Indonesia, visiting the temples on Java, we went to the temples at 6:30am and headed back to our base before lunch as it was getting hot. We have mostly travelled in Europe since we moved back to the UK. I think Japan would be a lovely trip with kids, avoid high summer though.

My friend took hers to Australia at that age and had an amazing time. Flying first class may have helped 😂

My kids are now very well travelled but a pool
and warmth was pretty much all they wanted at that age. Once the youngest was 6, we found it much easier to do some real travel, but until then we tended to go to Florida (see you’ve booked), or France/ Spain. In truth France and a canal boat was great fun.

If you search my username, you will see a few posts I’ve made about a couple of Toronto/southern Ontario trips we have taken. The first one was when my daughter was 4, we had a fabulous time!

Denmark is great for kids. Legoland and the Lego House are fun of course but loads to do beyond that, amazing playgrounds and super child friendly. We’ve been twice, once with our kids aged 5 and 3 and we just went back now we have three. This blog (not mine) gives a good overview of things to do for kids museummum.com/denmark-with-kids-billund-aarhus-and-beyond/

Thailand- we took DS at 18m and 4.5, both trips were brilliant.

When younger Scott Dunn, the best kids clubs a really fun holiday for kids, lots of different activities. But also the US California and Arizona, they loved Flagstaff and Sedona. Florida as teens is fab.
